Senior's perseverance as walk-on results in chance for action playing fullback

Sometimes, it's wise to play the odds and ride the sure thing.

Other times, you're tempted to punt caution to the curb and go for broke.

To borrow a poker term, football player Trever Robinson shouted "all in" five years ago coming out of Huguenot High.

Shunning numerous comfortable options (including Hampton, Howard and North Carolina A&T), where he was offered scholarships, Robinson aimed for the moon.

Fueled by that wonder drug - positive mental attitude - he enrolled as a walk-on at Ohio State.

And today Trever caught a TD pass!! I like to think I'm informed about Buckeye football, but when he scored I said "16? Who the hell is that?" Props to Trever: I love it when a walk-on playing out of love getssome glory like that!

Congrats to Trever. Kids, this is why you stand beside the head coach, even when you're the 2nd string FB in a spread offense that rarely uses a FB ... you never know when the starter will commit 17 false start penalties in a row and get pulled for a series.

Trever Robinson couldn't get Ohio State out of his head.

The all-state linebacker from Richmond, Va., knew he wanted to become a Buckeye after watching the team play just once while on a recruiting trip to Penn State. He stuck with his decision, even though it meant paying his own way as a walk-on.

"I liked the swagger Ohio State played with," he said. "If I had the opportunity, I was sure I was going to go there.

"They told me, 'If you work hard and get on some special teams or get on the two-deep, maybe you'll obtain a scholarship,' " he added, "but it wasn't promised."

Robinson, who turned down a few Division II offers, made the Buckeyes' kickoff team as a redshirt freshman, and his role steadily increased. He was awarded a scholarship as a junior last year, and OSU hasn't regretted the investment.

The backup fullback is playing on four special-teams units and made the first two receptions of his career this year, including a touchdown grab. And he's not the only former walk-on chipping in.

The Buckeyes' policy of rewarding walk-ons certainly makes sense to Robinson.

"You could always hold back scholarships for talented guys," he said, "but I believe we have a lot of talent already here that the public hasn't seen. A lot of times, they don't get the recognition, but they deserve it."

Something old, something new. That's Trever Robinson's M.O. midway through his fifth year at Ohio State. He scored a touchdown this season, a first for him. And -- thanks to another reshuffling of the rankings -- he again is suiting up for college football's No. 1.
A Huguenot High alumnus and originally a walk-on at Ohio State, Robinson is the Buckeyes' second-team fullback and a special-teams constant. He's a consumer-affairs major and -- along with his teammates -- a consumer of No. 1 recognition.
Ohio State, in fact, was top-ranked all of last season until a 41-14 loss to Florida in the national-championship game.
"It is a familiar feeling," Robinson said a couple of days ago. "But at the same time, we have to remain humble and pretend like we're not No. 1. Each week, whatever opponent you play, they're going to play their best and try to knock off No. 1. You have to play hard every week."
