Great for Teddy. It was sad to see his confidence drop and him trying too hard. Now they will get off his back and he can loosen up and be the star that he is. I bet the drops got to be a mental thing and him trying too hard.

The drops were at least partially mental. Teddy was never a tough WR that you could send into traffic, but he was pretty sure handed.

Even if he never becomes a true wide receiver, he can now be a big asset to the team again, and stop competing against himself & expectations in addition to the opposition.


Did they ask Sparano whether taking him off return duties was a mistake?

Looking forward to more of "The Ginn Mill" putting points on the boards for the Dolphins. Ted has caught flack for dropping but now some are starting to sing a greater tune as they realize his potentials for flying high game after game. Zoom, jump, dash, hop, spin, go...kickoff returns for Miami now have some tonic. As promoter Don King has said, "Excitement, excitement, excitement!" You go Teddy!

Dolphins WR Ted Ginn Jr. does more with fewer chances

DAVIE ? It looks like the Miami Dolphins have figured out the best use for receiver Ted Ginn Jr.

And the answer is not more chances to make plays, but fewer.

Ginn played only 22 total snaps in Sunday?s 30-25 win against the Jets, yet had his most successful game as a professional. His two kickoff returns for touchdowns were a Dolphins record, as were his 299 return yards. And he became the first player in NFL history to have two touchdowns of 100 yards or more.

But those skills won?t get him added playing time on offense, where he played just 16 snaps after moving behind rookie receiver Brian Hartline on the depth chart for the first time.

Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said Ginn is a ?streaky? player, who could be more effective as a kickoff return specialist and occasional deep threat than as a starting wide receiver.

?You have to understand what the player can do well and let him only do what he can do well,? Sparano said. ?He can benefit from learning that it only takes one play, and one play could be the different in some of these situations.?

Ginn played the fewest number of plays since his rookie days in 2007 when former head coach Cam Cameron drafted Ginn primarily to be a special teams spark. Sparano said Ginn?s returns were ?a major reason why we won the game,? and hopes Ginn has learned not to value the number of opportunities he gets but what he can do with those chances.

?Some of these other guys played 60-70 plays and didn?t have that kind of impact,? Sparano said. ?Ted can certainly benefit from seeing the possibilities of him making plays no matter what the play count is.?

The Dolphins still intend on using Ginn as a deep threat. On Sunday, they designed two plays longer than 20 yards for Ginn, and he beat the coverage. But quarterback Chad Henne was sacked on each of those plays.

?The factor that he could be,? Sparano said, ?is a major deal.?

The Dolphins' disappointing start generated plenty of commentary from team alums at Don Shula's and O.J. McDuffie's charity events last week. Ted Ginn Jr. drew derision from several former Dolphins for drops and his penchant for running out of bounds.
``He's an embarrassment and a coward,'' Bob Kuechenberg said. ``He's got alligator arms. It's sad. I don't even know that he has the ability. I haven't seen it.''
McDuffie lamented, ``Every good team has a solid No. 1 receiver, and we have nobody. Just a bunch of twos and threes. Teddy can run, but how much of a football player is he? You either have it or not. Teddy is not as astute a player as I thought he would be. I've seen him go down when nobody is around.''
Jim Kiick diagnosed Ginn's problem as mental. ``He doesn't concentrate. And his route running is not good.''
Mercury Morris said Ginn ``needs to talk to either me or [inspirational speaker] Tony Robbins about becoming enlightened and doing the opposite of the things he thinks are right.'' Mark Duper said he sent Ginn an e-mail, offering tutoring, but Ginn never responded.
``The only way you're going to get better is if you get somebody to come in and work with him,'' Duper said. ``I would do that for him. I wouldn't charge. As far as not wanting to get hit, I could [fix] that. He's got the speed I had when I came into the league. You can't teach that. What you can teach is technique and fundamentals, which he's been missing. I was fortunate enough to have Nat Moore to play with. Ted doesn't have that.''

Despite playing less, Ted Ginn Jr. managed to provide more. The Dolphins' new challenge: How do you get the most out of Ginn?

He played only 16 snaps on offense. He didn't catch a single pass. And actually, he only had one football even thrown his way.

Yet on a day when the Dolphins' Ted Ginn Jr. saw less action than ever in the wake of his demotion as a wide receiver, his impact on the outcome of a game had rarely been so prominent before Sunday's 30-25 win against the Jets.

``Some of these other guys played 60, 70 plays out there and didn't have that kind of impact,'' coach Tony Sparano said Monday.

So Ginn's two-touchdown performance could be viewed as nothing more than a textbook dose of irony. But for those willing to open their minds, there might be more to this success story than a quirk of fate.

The lesson could be simple: Might less actually be more?

``Ted can certainly benefit from seeing the possibilities of him making plays no matter what the play count is,'' Sparano said. ``What did he have? Six kickoff returns -- and he played 16 plays on offense. So he played 22 plays in the game, and quite honestly was a major reason why we won the football game.''

SPEED RACER

There are several ways to approach this theory. Here's one: The obvious asset of Ginn's skill set is his speed, which means the preservation of his energy throughout a game could be beneficial toward getting the highest output from his legs.

Too many deep routes during a game can cause fatigue. And too many deep routes without any passes thrown his way can cause complacency. Neither fatigue nor complacency was a factor for Ginn on Sunday.

Not when returning kicks. And not when running routes. Returning punts isn't part of the plan for now.

``It does not matter to me how many snaps he plays or any of those things,'' Sparano said. ``He has that kind of strike ability. Never mind the two kickoff returns, but two plays on offense, he ran by people and we just couldn't get him the football.

``I think he can benefit from learning that it really only takes one play, and I think one play can be the difference in some of these situations.''

Exactly. They need a real QB bad. If they don't want him, shut up and trade him to the Colts where they know how to use WRs. Or maybe the Saints. Haven't watched enough of Brees to know if he can throw long.
