Cleveland Indians' Scott Lewis on 15-day disabled list because of an elbow strain

Tribe left-hander Scott Lewis was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday because of an elbow strain. The Indians made the decision Friday night, hours after Lewis departed from his season debut.

Lewis gave up four runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings against the Blue Jays. He threw 94 pitches.

Lewis underwent an MRI exam Saturday morning.

"It's been bugging me for a couple, three weeks now," he said. "I've pitched through some soreness before, and it usually fades away. I thought this would be the same, but it keeps getting worse. [Friday night], it got to the point where, on the last pitch, it really tightened up on me."

Lewis, 25, underwent Tommy John surgery in 2003 as a sophomore at Ohio State.

"I hope it's not my ligament, obviously," he said. "It feels a little different. This feels more like a flexor tendon. It's in the same area, but there's a lot of other stuff over there. I'm trying to stay positive."

Over the past couple of weeks, Lewis said, the ligament has tested OK.

Lewis, a third-round pick in 2004, made his major-league debut Sept. 10, 2008. He went 4-0 with a 2.63 ERA in four starts for the Tribe last season.

Including exhibition games, Lewis has allowed eight homers in his past 12 innings.

"I think it's going to be more of a muscle-soreness thing in his forearm," Indians manager Eric Wedge said.

CLEVELAND: Scott Lewis' forearm injury is not considered serious, but it will keep him on the disabled list for two to four weeks, according to Indians head trainer Lonnie Soloff.

After examining an MRI scan of Lewis' left arm, Soloff said Sunday: ''It was very encouraging news. He has a mild left forearm strain. He felt it on the last pitch he threw on Opening Day.

''There is no structural damage, but there is inflammation in the flexor pronator [muscle group]. Scott will not throw for five to seven days, then increase his activity. We are hoping for an expedited return of two to four weeks.''

Even if Lewis misses only 15 days, the minimum he can spend on the disabled list, he will miss two starts, the first of which will be Wednesday in Kansas City against the Royals. Presumably, Lewis' place in the rotation will be taken by reliever Zach Jackson or one of two Columbus starters, Jeremy Sowers or Aaron Laffey.

Whereas Lewis felt the forearm tighten considerably on the last pitch he threw Friday, the injury predates the home opener by several weeks.

''It was a little sore in spring training, but I thought it was something I could pitch through,'' Lewis said. ''But it kept getting tighter and tighter, and finally on that last pitch, I felt it pull.''

LEWIS SEEKS SECOND OPINION ? Scott Lewis pulled himself out of his last rehab start with the Aeros after 65 pitches with soreness in his left elbow.

''He didn't feel like he was 100 percent because of his symptoms,'' Soloff said. ''He is going to visit Dr. [James] Andrews for a second opinion next week. Surgery might be an option, but in our opinion it is not the best option.''

Lewis is on the disabled list with a strained elbow, but as a collegian at Ohio State, he underwent Tommy John elbow surgery.

CLEVELAND -- Scott Lewis started the Indians' home opener this season and hasn't been heard from since.

On Monday, the Indians recalled Lewis from his Minor League rehab assignment, reinstated him from the 60-day disabled list and optioned him to Triple-A Columbus.

The left-handed Lewis won the Tribe's vacant rotation spot in Spring Training camp and made just one start on April 10. He gave up four runs over 4 1/3 innings against the Blue Jays in a no-decision, then went on the DL two days later with what was deemed as a "mild forearm strain" by the club. It was expected he would miss a month, at most, but the pain persisted. Lewis visited Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., in June and was essentially told he would have to learn to pitch with the pain near his elbow.

KANSAS CITY, MO After making one start at Columbus, left-hander Scott Lewis complained of pain in his left arm and was placed on the minor-league (seven-day) disabled list.

''We don't have all the information yet,'' Indians head trainer Lonnie Soloff said. ''But it's on the outside of the left elbow or forearm. We expect him to pitch again before the end of the season.''

Lewis was not sent back to Cleveland for a medical examination. Rather, he was checked out by the Clippers' team doctor.

In spring training, Lewis won a competition to become the Tribe's No. 5 starter, but he has missed almost the entire year with an elbow injury (apparently different than his current problem).

CLEVELAND -- The Indians did a little housecleaning Friday, taking three players off the 40-man roster. Left-handers Scott Lewis and Mike Gosling and infielder Niuman Romero were outrighted to Triple-A Columbus.

That brings the 40-man roster total down to 33. Right-handers Jake Westbrook and Anthony Reyes, both of whom are on the 60-day disabled list, don't factor into that total.

The Indians are making room on their roster in anticipation of the Nov. 20 deadline to have the roster set in advance of the Rule 5 Draft, which takes place Dec. 10 at the Winter Meetings.

Lewis was the only noteworthy name outrighted Friday. He was the Tribe's starter for the home opener against the Blue Jays on April 10, but the 4 1/3 innings he tossed in that game were the only 4 1/3 innings he tossed in the big leagues this season. Lewis' elbow flared up in that start, and he spent most of the year rehabbing the injury.

On the whole, it's been an injury-plagued career for the 26-year-old Lewis, though he did show flashes of what he can do, when healthy, when he went 4-0 in four September starts for the Tribe in '08.
