Steve does have an mean streak in him, I think last year in HS he had 7 personal fouls. All of them came after the other guy was playing dirty cause they couldnt get around him. He doesn't put up with much sh*t when you get him [censored]ed. I know for a fact,i stay on good terms with him. Like most parents say to the older son, "you better watch out how much you mess with him, cause one day he will be bigger then you" (he has me by about 3" and 40 lbs. now) lol

You know, back when we had the "which Freshmen will make an impact?" thread, I got shot down by a lot of people when I said that SR was going to step up this year.

So, without further ado: "I TOLD YOU SO!"

My son and I watched Steve fairly closely when he got into the game on Saturday. Being there live, my impression was the same as yours Killer. He seemed to blow up his guy every play and did a good job in pass protection. I firmly believe that he is going to be much much better than advertised by the so-called experts.

My boy is 7 (4.5 ft tall and 90 pounds) and this year was his 1st year in organized football. He played center and was pretty good. He watched Steve and commented that that is how he wants to "knock kids on their butt next year." This was his 1st game in the 'Shoe and he found a player to serve as a role model for the next 3 years. As a coach, that makes me very very happy; as a father and an alum, it brought a nice lump to my throat.

Welcome UD. Steve has performed well so far. Did the early enrollment make the difference in his development in comparison to the 'higher ranked' freshman in the class?

You know I would love to have a lineman know proper technique or whatever, but technique is over rated. I mean as an offensive lineman I'd come up going over what I need to do in my mind. Say for example The play is a 28 sweep. Well hell that means the 2 back is going 8 hole so I gata bust my ass and get on the outside of the Defensive Tackle. Why should it be ok come up, come off the ball right, use the right 1,2,3 steps, and then get to my man. You have an Assignment and one way or another get the job done. I could care less if it looks pretty as long as we move the chains and everyone takes the person they're suppose to! I mean I know I have a big time love for coaching and I wanna be one, and yes some technique will be tough however once the ball is snapped the only thing I'd teach is fire off the ball (which we seem not to do other than the past 2 week). Some Technique in all of football is pointless if you don't get the job done. Now if you can look all cool and stuff while kicking ass then more power to you, but I'd take a bad ass like you guys say than to have some kid coming off the ball trying to go through steps.

I have to disagree here...

There is not a position on the football field that requires a better usage of technique than the OL. The problem lies in teaching the proper technique for your personnel. The first step of an OLman is the most important step of the play as it can decide the leverage, angle, and momentum in a split second.

Most of tOSU's OL issues have come from missed assignments and general confusion up front. For example, the miscommunication saturday involving the X stunt between the DE and the OLB that ended up getting Smith crushed. That had nothing to do with technique but everything to do with adjusting your assignment to the defensive look.

buckiprof, did you take your son down after the game to get autographs? Steve signs for atleast 15 minutes.

Bucknutty, yep your right I am the small one.

Steve has been working very hard since he has gotten there, his spring game went ok but nothing to the point where he stuck out. There were a few plays were he got burnt, but was told they werent his fault, because he didnt know what to do during that situation. Also he got burned one time when they blitzed, during the spring game you are not allowed too. But as you can see the spring game was along time ago and he has learned and became good enough to play as a true freshman.

true. there have also been some pretty stupid holding penalties that have cost some major yardage. pittman's 46 yard run against IU called back for holding on roy hall i believe. gonzolez cost ginn a long run. some of the holding calls have definately been ticky-tack at best.

the refs at the psu game did osu very few favors at all.

bottom line, the offense is finally starting to move in the right direction. however, this should have started much sooner. if osu somehow manages a win against msu, they have the potential to run the table.<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

Unfortunately I did not. I plan on taking him down for the spring game and will make sure that is on the list. Let Steve know that there is a little (well not so little for his age) lineman in NE Ohio thatis excited to watch him play.

Thumbs up

I got Steve's autograph on a t-shirt after last game (along with as many of the other players as I could round up) for a friend. I thanked him, and he thanked me right back. Class act. And polite. It was a pleasure to have him sign the shirt.

Udogg?

Can you address the issue of red shirts being on guys because of grades? There is speculation that at least one true frosh is ready for the field but is being held out because of class attendance or something related to academics. Can you verify this?
