Bills rookies outshine experts' predictions Many played a significant role for team this season Sal Maiorana Staff writer (January 5, 2007) ? ORCHARD PARK ? Can't even IMAGINE how incredible Whitner would have been as a senior as tOSU. Having him here this year would have been insane. Great to see him excelling in the NFL though. GO DONTE!

PERSONNEL ANALYSIS: The Bills were thrilled with the performance of rookie Ss Donte Whitner and Ko Simpson. Both were thrown into the starting lineup early in the season and played beyond expectations. There are risks in playing rookies at any position because they are prone to making mistakes. With inexperienced safeties, they are susceptible to biting on play-action fakes and getting beat on long passes. But Whitner and Simpson played with discipline in deep coverage and didn't give up a lot of big plays. The defense allowed 39 completions of 20 or more yards, which tied for the seventh fewest in the NFL. The average distance of the 20-plus pass plays was 26.2 yards, which was the lowest average in the NFL. The team feels vindicated for making Whitner the disputed eighth-round draft pick last spring. He is a physical player in run support and has the speed to run with most receivers. Simpson showed good range, ball skills and proved to be tougher than he looks. One AFC pro personnel chief said Whitner and Simpson could potentially be the best safety tandem in the NFL in the near future. . . .

Those are some serious numbers for a rookie safety, and Donte was integral to the Bills' better-than-expected season. Great pick, Marv. |
