Cleveland ties help players relate to furor Bills' Evans, Whitner have family, friends with mixed emotions By Marla Ridenour Beacon Journal sportswriter Published on Thursday, Dec 13, 2007 BEREA: When he was growing up, Bedford High School graduate Lee Evans remembers going to games at Cleveland Stadium with his dad and meeting players afterward. Lake Catholic product Joe Jurevicius watched the Browns' 1986 playoff games on a black-and-white television in his garage. Glenville's Donte Whitner was parked in front of the tube, too, cheering when the Browns were doing well and griping when they struggled. The Cleveland natives appreciate the magnitude of the game as the Browns (8-5) host the Buffalo Bills (7-6) at 1 p.m. Sunday in a showdown with AFC wild-card implications. Don't be hating NFL Buckeyes Thursday, December 13, 2007 By Steve Doerschuk Repository sports writer BEREA Maybe it?s an Ohio State-haters thing. The big school along the Olentangy was supposed to get wiped out by Miami in the 2002 national title game. It?s a perceived underdog now in the Jan. 7 championship clash against LSU. This year, the Dolphins were thought to have water on the brain when they spent a No. 9 overall draft pick on Ohio State?s Ted Ginn Jr. Last year, Mel Kiper?s hair practically stood on end at the shock Buckeye safety Donte Whitner was drafted at No. 8 overall by the Bills. Nobody reacted more strongly to the ESPN draft-day railing against Buffalo?s supposed stupidity than Whitner himself. ?At the time,? Whitner admitted Wednesday, ?I was a little bitter.? Cont... |

Browns notebook: Bills' Whitner still roots for hometown Browns Thursday, December 13, 2007 3:12 AM By James Walker THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH Joe Rimkus Jr.Miami HeraldDolphins receiver Ted Ginn Jr., right, tackles Donte Whitner after the Bills safety made an interception. So far, Whitner is proving himself worthy of the No. 8 overall pick in 2006. BEREA, Ohio -- Buffalo Bills safety Donte Whitner is torn between his two favorite teams this week. The Cleveland native grew up a die-hard Browns fan, but he will play a key role Sunday in the Bills' game at the Browns. Both teams are vying for the second AFC wild-card spot. Cleveland (8-5) has a one-game lead over Buffalo (7-6) with three games remaining. Cont... |
