I'm a Buffalonian and will be a senior at tOSU next fall. You're response has some validity. I have been saying for over a year now that Donte is very well respected around the league and gets no respect among Bills fans. Its extremely frustrating to see. Especially, because with literally no defensive line the past 2 season he's asked to play all positions and has never been able to concentrate on being a SS.

So I was on the road for most of the day, making my first trip to the beach in 18 years. (Now that we're here, it's a working vacation -- I'll be cranking out the content as regularly as usual. Unless I get too much sand in my laptop.)

And while taking a brief stretch-and-stroll break in order to alleviate a chronic case of car ass, I checked the stories on the site, scanned the e-mail account, and quickly perused Twitter.

I learned while perusing Twitter that Bills safety Donte Whitner isn't happy with us.

"Profootballtalk is a non credible site....me lose my job lol don't u guys have better things to write about?" Whitner tweeted.

Whitner was responding to an item posted by Gregg Rosenthal regarding the possibility that Whitner could lose his starting job.

But what Whitner didn't realize is that Gregg was merely citing a report from FOXSports.com.

Instead, then, Whitner should have tweeted is this: "FOXSports.com is a non credible site."

Let's see if he rectifies his error.

Like the previous poster said. The only way he doesnt start is if he is injured. If Byrd speeds up the learning curve then he moves over to SS.

Actually Donte could not care any lesser about some weak sauce website. Someone alerted him about it, and he probably just tweeted that message from his blackberry or something. I bet he's already forgot the url..nobody cares about your webpage Mike.

Again, he's getting ripped apart by his own readers on this story. I'd say 1 out of 10 posts defend Mike, the rest just rip him for passing on a bogus story, and then blaming the story, not himself for putting it on his page.

I live in the Buffalo area and don't need to tell anyone what makes up a bad pro football team (poor front office). The Bills have been plagued with mostly poor decisions in free agency and draft day for the last 10 years.

Whitner was not a popular pick at all when selected 8th overall a few years back (NT Haloti Ngata of the Ravens should have been the pick) but the fans slowly warmed up to Whitner.

The Bills run a pathetic Cover 2 D which generates zero pass rush and hangs the DB's out to dry all too often. Maybin of Penn St. hopefully will help the pass rush in the long term.

Whitners' recent arrest wasn't his first and bad publicity can make a fanbase start looking more closely at simple stats, which don't justify his salary.

The 2nd round pick Byrd had 17 picks and a lot of knockdowns at Oregon St. His Dad Gil was a damn good DB in his day with the Chargers so the Bills want to see this guy start badly and have little to lose, with zero INT's from either safety position. That means Whitner goes back to SS but Bryan Scott, the vet from Penn St. is 220 lbs. and is the classic In The Box safety who can play like a 4th LB against the run. He's done well filling in at SS while Whitner was playing FS.

Now It's obvious I like Whitner and Youboty, who when healthy is well liked by this coaching staff for his coverage as the 3rd DB. I'm not sure where Whitner stands with this coaching staff but the Bills beat writers were the 1st to mention these thoughts on Whitner after seeing Scott get the majority of the reps in the spring and early summer OTA's. When Whitner did attend, he did a lot of standing on the sideleines and was healthy. Uh oh. PFT is a rumor site but just picked up on this.

It may actually have some legs but I'm hoping Whitner can erase all this come training camp by playing well.

Well, yes. PFT has good stuff most of the time. Should've handled this situation better for sure, but it's still credible..

I didn't watch the video but I saw him on the show yesterday. Talked about how his brother was going to play at tOSU too but no specifics given. Donte then talked about how he hasn't been able to beat up on his brother for the past couple of years cause he's so much bigger than him. I thik Jay said Dawan was at 6'3'' 285lbs.

Not really sure if Donte is right or not but he did say Dawan would be playing at tOSU. No specifics though.

There have not been, nor will there be, any guarantees emanating from the mouth of Donte Whitner this year.

Well, at least not publicly.

"I could if I want to, but I'm not because people take it and run with it," said Whitner, who saw that happen first hand last year when he guaranteed in the spring of 2008 that the Bills would make the playoffs, then saw that bold statement blow up in his face when the team stumbled to another 7-9 finish.

"We'll see how the season goes," Whitner continued, "but I think we'll have a good one. I'm not saying it verbally, but the expectations are still high."
Whitner knows all about expectations, and the perception of not being able to fulfill them.

From a team standpoint the Bills fell way short of living up to preseason expectations in 2008, blowing a 5-1 start and missing the playoffs for the ninth year in a row, of which Whitner has been a part of the last three.
And individually, though Whitner disagrees with the opinion of some that he has fallen short of the expectations that come from being the eighth overall pick in the 2006 draft, he admits that he has heard the grumbling.

"I don't really listen to any of it," Whitner said. "Any other team I talk to, they congratulate me on the way I play the game. The natural thing to do would be to get frustrated, but you have to understand people's mindset.

"You have to understand that a lot of people who talk haven't played the game or played in the NFL. Now if it was a lot of people inside the NFL who watched the film and knew football and said those things, that would be a different story."

Actually, Whitner has begun to pay attention. A couple weeks ago Whitner noticed a Fox Sports report that appeared on ProFootballTalk.com that indicated there was a chance he could lose his starting job. Whitner spent part of a day on his Twitter account railing about the story.

Whitner remembering his grandmother

Donte Whitner lost his grandmother to cancer this past March. And he?ll be taking a small piece of the breast cancer awareness color scheme onto the field every day this season.
Whitner will be wearing a pink mouthpiece all season.
?I wear that to signify my love for her and show my support to everybody that?s dealing with cancer, going through cancer, has a loved one that?s died from cancer,? said Whitner. ?So I?ll continue to wear that throughout the entire football season.?
Whitner?s grandmother was like a second mother to him.
?I didn?t have a dad growing up, so it was my mom and my grandmom,? he said. ?When I lost her, I lost a piece of myself and I?ll continue to wear that mouthpiece.?
