Buckeyes sweep Dartmouth

from the official site

OSU Comeback Leads to 5-3 Win, Doubleheader Sweep vs. Dartmouth

Buckeye pitchers limit Big Green to five hits in pair of games

Jason Zoeller's third hit of the game drove in the fifth run of the game.

March 25, 2005

Box Score

BRADENTON, Fla. - Ohio State broke a 3-3 tie when it scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning and added another run in the inning to hand Dartmouth a 5-3 loss and take both ends of a doubleheader Friday at IMG Academy.

With the scored tied in the bottom of the sixth inning, Ohio State turned a lead-off infield single to short by Eric Fryer (Fr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) into the winning run. After a fly out and a ground out, Matt Angle (Fr., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) beat out another infield single to put runners at the corners. A wild pitch by Dartmouth reliever Kyle Zeis enabled Fryer to score. Jason Zoeller (So., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) singled to right to score Angle from second for the second run of the inning and put the Buckeyes up by two runs with the Big Green down to their final three outs.

Jeffrey Carroll (So., Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson), who came in to start the fifth with the score tied 3-3, got two fly outs and a strikeout to earn his first win of the season. Carroll pitched the final three innings and did not allow a hit or a run with one walk and a pair of strikeouts.

The Buckeyes out-hit Dartmouth 11-2 in the game after having a 12-3 advantage in game one of the doubleheader.

The Big Green capitalized on a lead-off triple down the right-field line by Will Bashelor to score its first run of the game in the top of the first inning. He scored on a ground out by Andrew Nacario.

The Big Green added two more runs in the third off OSU starter Mike Madsen (Sr., Canfield, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin), who was making his first appearance since his March 4 start against Georgia because of tendonitis in his shoulder. Marty Hebert led off the inning with a single up the middle, but Madsen walked the next batter before hitting the next two, the first of which scored Hebert. A second walk in the inning, this time to Will Schmidley, plated Dartmouth's third run of the game.

That prompted Ohio State coach Bob Todd to pull Madsen out of the game in favor or Trey Fausnaugh (So., Circleville, Ohio/Westfall), who came in to get a foul out and a double play to prevent any more runs from scoring.

Ohio State tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring three runs on four hits. Ronnie Bourquin (So., Canton, Ohio/Canton South) led off the inning with a single to center and Cody Caughenbaugh (Jr., Newark, Ohio/Licking Valley) followed with a single to right. Jedidiah Stephen (Jr., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah) plated Bourquin with a single to left to put the Buckeyes on the board.

Dartmouth starter Chase Carpenter walked Fryer and gave up an infield single to Paul Farinacci (Sr., Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura) to make the score 3-2, before Stephen tied the game on a fielder's choice by Mike Rabin (Sr., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East).

Madsen allowed all three Dartmouth runs on two hits with a pair of walks and one strikeout in two innings. He faced five batters in the third before the Buckeyes brought in Fausnaugh, who did not allow a run in two innings of work.

Zoeller led the Buckeyes in going 3-for-4 with one RBI. Caughenbaugh was the only other OSU player with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 in the game. Farinacci and Stephen each drove in a run in one-hit efforts. All but one Buckeye starter had a hit in the game.

Ohio State, which has won eight games in a row, will close its eight-game spring break trip to Bradenton Saturday at 11:30 a.m. against Cornell. It also brings a close to a 16-game slate away from Columbus. The last time Ohio State went undefeated on a spring trip was in 2001, when it was 10-0 in Bradenton. The Buckeyes welcome Toledo to open the ninth season at Bill Davis Stadium Wednesday at 2:05 p.m.

Good job by the bucks. Sounds like they're playing some good baseball.

The bats seem to have gone to sleep, but the entire pitching staff has been impressive. I hope the weather holds off and the Bucks can win their game today and finish the trip unbeaten.

After the spring break trip, Toledo comes to town and then things get serious....a road trip to start the real season against a heavy hitting Illinois team. The bats need to step up big time if the Bucks expect to win that series against the Illini. IMO, our pitching staff wont be able to contain them for 4 straight games.....we will need some runs !!

We need Howell back to get this offense in full gear. Hopefully his shoulder heals up.
