Oakland Pulls Stunning 6-5 Upset at Ohio State with Three Runs in 9th

Buckeyes Strand 15 runners vs. Grizzlies and 25 in last two games

Mike Rabin's sacrifice in the bottom of the eighth had given Ohio State a one-run lead.

April 6, 2005

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State could not make anything out of four Oakland errors, two passed balls and a hit batsman and left 15 base runners as Oakland upset the Buckeyes at Bill Davis Stadium. The win was just the second of the season for a team that has played 19 games, while it was the fifth loss in a row for the Scarlet and Gray.

The Buckeyes rallied to take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning, but in the top of the ninth, a two-out bases loaded double by Oakland centerfielder Will Tollison gave the Golden Grizzlies a 6-4 lead, putting the pressure back on Ohio State to try and give its 18th-year skipper his 700th victory in school history.

Matt Angle (Fr., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) led off the bottom of the ninth inning with an infield single and went to second on a single through the left side by Jedidiah Stephen (Jr., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah). A passed ball moved both runners into scoring position, before Oakland closer Kevin Hale walked Paul Farinacci (Sr., Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura) to load the bases. A sacrifice fly by Mike Rabin (Sr., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) scored Angle to pull the Buckeyes within one run and put runners at the corners. Hale walked pinch hitter Steve Caravati (Sr., Dover, Ohio/Dover) to load the bases again, but Hale picked up the fielder's choice off the bat of Wes Schirtzinger (So., Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) and threw home to nail the tying run at the plate. A grounder to short by Jason Zoeller (So., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) ended the game.

Oakland's third pitcher of the game, Scott Boleski, picked up his first win of the season (1-1) in 1.1 innings, while Hale earned his first save of the year. Brett Hatcher (Sr., Bellefontaine, Ohio/Bellefontaine) got the loss after giving up two singles and a walk in the top of the ninth. Trey Fausnaugh (So., Circleville, Ohio/Westfall) came in after Hatcher walked pinch hitter Brad Nole and gave up the three-run double to Tollison.

Ohio State broke a 3-3 tie and had taken a one-run lead in the bottom of the eighth. Boleski walked Rabin to start the inning and a throwing error by Boleski on a bunt by Chris Macke (Fr., Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute North) put two runners on. Boleski walked Schirtzinger to load the bases, but responded with a strikeout of the next batter for the first out of the inning A shallow fly out by Jacob Howell (So., Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) was able to score Rabin from third.

The Buckeyes, who left 10 runners on base in the finale game of the Illinois series and a total of 26 in that series in Champaign, left 15 runners Wednesday, including three in the third, seventh and ninth innings.

Oakland first baseman Nate Recknagel gave Oakland a 2-0 lead when he launched his second home run of the season over the fence in straight-away centerfield in the top of the second inning. Also scoring on the play was Kyle Crepeau, who reached on a fielding error by OSU third baseman Chris Macke (Fr., Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute North) to lead off the inning.

Cody Caughenbaugh (Jr., Newark, Ohio/Licking Valley) answered Recknagel's home run with one of his own off the face of the scoreboard in right-center field. His first home run was a solo shot and pulled the Buckeyes within a 2-1 tally. Zoeller drove in Macke in the bottom of third to even the game. Macke got on base with a single through the right side. Ohio State had three hits in the inning, but left the bases loaded.

The Golden Grizzlies turned a lead-off double by Kurt Rosenacker into its third run of the game in the fifth inning. Bryan DeLamielleur plated Rosenacker with a single to right field to give his team a 3-2 lead.

The Buckeyes again tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring Adam Schneider (So., Agoura Hills, Calif./Agoura), who reached on throwing error, the second of the game, by Oakland third baseman Chad Winkler. Schneider went to third on a base hit by Jedidiah Stephen (Jr., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah) and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Farinacci.

Stephen led Ohio State with two of its nine hits, edging Oakland in the hit column by one. Oakland had four errors in the game compared to only one by the Buckeyes.

Ohio State, now with a 13-9 record, will play host to Purdue this weekend in the Big Ten home opener. The teams will throw out the first pitch Friday at 6:35 p.m. Fireworks will follow the game. The Saturday doubleheader will begin at 1:05 p.m. and was moved up because of the NCAA Frozen Four championship game in Value City Arena at 7 p.m. The series concludes Sunday at 1:05 p.m. The Friday and Sunday games will be broadcast on NPR 820 (WOSU-AM). All four games will be broadcast on the Internet at www.wosu.org.

Todd's gotten lazy in recruiting and it's starting to show. Way too many Columbus kids on this team.
