Illinois weekend seires

Much better than Wed. Not weather wise, but on the field. OSU 5-1, Josh Newman pitched a CG with 14 Ks. He struck out two batters in the 1st through 5th innings. Good game for Drew Anderson...3-5 with a single, double, and triple.

Doubleheader tomorrow starting at 4.

They did sound better, didn't they? Looks dry today (Sat) but in Central Oh, things change quickly. I really wanted to take my son tomorrow (replica hat day) but they are calling for windy with possible snow!

Congrats to Bob Todd for picking up career victory #300 in Big 10 conference play after last night's 5-1 win over Illinois.

Scott Newman looked great on the mound, getting the the complete game victory while fanning a career-high 14 and not walking a batter.

Buckeyes romp 14-3 in the opener.

In the nightcap, Trent Luyster gave up a 2 run shot over the right field wall to tie the game at 3 in the top of the 7th, but Ronnie Borquin hit a towering 2 run shot to right in the bottom of the 7th and the Bucks got the 5-3 walkoff win.

Cold. Windy. Illinois 12-4. The only good news is that I got a hat and a foul ball rolled to me.

Dan DeLucia and Trey Fausnaugh couldn't throw a strike to save their lives, and when they did, they got hammered.

after his walk-off home run Saturday night.

Baseball:

Ohio State designated hitter Ronnie Bourquin has been named the Big Ten Baseball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

Bourquin, a freshman from Canton, Ohio , hit .529 in the Buckeyes' five games last week and hit .643 against Illinois. He was 9-for-17 (including two doubles and a home run) with five RBI and scored four runs. Bourquin was a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday against the Illini and in game two hit a walk-off, two-run home run, which clinched the 5-3 victory. He posted a 1.000 slugging percentage against Illinois while adding a .667 on-base percentage. He shared the honor with Michigan State's Travis Gulick. Northwestern's J.A. Happ won pitcher of the week honors.

Bourquin's shot on Staurday night was a thing of beauty. I loved seeing the RF start jogging towards the dugout before the ball even cleared the fence.

Sunday was ugly, but what do you expect with 2 freshmen pitching. DeLucia will be fine with some more work in the Wednesday games, as will Fausnaugh. I gotta think both will get around 2-3 innings against Oakland.

Myers looked good when he was in the game on Sunday. I was hoping to get a better look at him until he got hit by that liner. With some more work he could be a dominant pitcher with his size. Carroll was pretty decent too.

Lewis is looking better and better in simulated action. I think we'll see him come in for relief work in a week or so... they're not going to rush him back and the cold weather isn't helping things out. This team would have been phenomenal with a Lewis - Newman - Madsen - Luyster rotation.

Overall it was a great weekend. The bats finally came alive, that is a great sign of things to come hopefully. The pitching will sort itself out as some of these youngsters get some time on the mound. We just gotta keep the bats warm.
