I was in Columbus last week, helping Dad get his house ready to sell. I had the privilege of attending a luncheon on Friday at the clubhouse on the
OSU Golf Courses. It's a regular gathering that honors Dick Hindman and Chuck Rockwell, who some of you may recognize as long time (and old time) supporters of baseball in central Ohio. At age 57, I was the youngest person in attendance.
Of the 24 or so regulars in the group, several are former Buckeye ballers. I took a few minutes to look up some of their records. Included are:
After myself, the youngest person there was Bruce Heine (66,67,68), Team Captain in 68, played 2B on the 1966 National Championship team (batted 2 for 3 in the title game); currently coaching the Delaware Cows in the wood bat league.
Dale Hampshire (58,59), holds Buckeye single season triples record. 1959 batting leader (.322), leader in runs scored, doubles, triples, and hits (tied).
Gary Leppert (58,59), 1959 leader in RBIs, stolen bases, and hits (tied).
Dave Koblentz (60), coached at West High, Upper Arlington, and currently pitching coach for the Delaware Cows.
John Ramseyer (58) usually attends, but was absent on Friday. Dale Denny (58,59), 1959 ERA leader (2.55), lives out of town, but attends at least once per year. Another who was part of this group was Deck Webb (59,60).
The luncheon was an extraordinary experience. All in attendance (in addition to those mentioned above) share such a deep friendship, comraderie, and love for each other, that I felt honored to be allowed into their group for the day. Anyhoo, just thought you Buckeye baseball fans might be interested.
