ASU beat Winthrop tonight 14-1. Have 2 more games against Winthrop and then finish the season with Oregon, UCLA and Arizona. ASU shouldn't lose another game this season. Currently 36-11 and have a 3 game lead over Oregon State in the Pac-10.

Sun Devils defeat Oregon 10-2, reach 40 win plateau
From their Official Site TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 2 Arizona State University baseball team defeated Oregon 10-2 on Saturday to reach the 40-win mark for the third straight season and sixth time in the last seven years. A crowd of 3,415 at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark saw the Sun Devils move to 40-11 overall, 18-5 in the Pac-10, with the victory. It is the 30th time in program history that ASU has won 40 or more games. Carlos Ramirez had three hits and hit his team-leading 16th home run of the season to lead the Sun Devil offense. Kole Calhoun and Riccio Torrez also had home runs, while Abe Ruiz had a three-run triple. Jordan Swagerty started and went 6.2 innings on the mound, allowing eight hits and two earned runs while striking out a career-high eight to earn the win and improve to 3-1 on the season. Mitchell Lambson finished the game out of the bullpen, striking out five over the final 2.1 innings. Continued... |

Here's a little tidbit on ASU's team this year.
It bears remembering that ASU had a school record 15 players drafted by the major leagues after last season with only one of those, Jason Kipnis, opting to return. The losses included first-round picks Brett Wallace and Ike Davis, third-rounder Petey Paramore and sixth-rounder Kiel Roling. Still this year's Sun Devils went 44-12, just one fewer win than last season, thanks to a pitching staff that is arguably ASU's best since 1975. Kipnis, Matt Newman and Raoul Torrez are the only position players who returned from 2008. Carlos Ramirez, Drew Maggi, Riccio Torrez, Kole Calhoun, Zack MacPhee, Jared McDonald, Zach Wilson, Johnny Ruettiger and Abe Ruiz all are in their first season at ASU as are pitchers Josh Spence, Mitchell Lambson and Jordan Swagerty. "I don't think people realize how much these kids have stepped up," Murphy said. "I don't think they get enough credit. You've got a middle infielder of two guys (Maggi and MacPhee) that have never played college baseball before. Neither were high draft picks. Throw in a brand new catcher (Ramirez). |
