Carte Drives In Season-High Five Runs In Second Game

ROCK HILL, SC – Winthrop pounded out 18 runs on 17 hits to sweep a doubleheader from Seton Hall, 8-2 and 11-1, in baseball action Wednesday at The Winthrop Ballpark. In game one, Chase Edwards shut out the Pirates over six and two-thirds innings as the Winthrop bats broke out in the middle innings for an 8-2 Winthrop victory.

Edwards (2-1) gave up just three hits and struck out two to pick up his second win of the year.

The game was scoreless through the first three innings before Winthrop scored in the bottom of the fourth to take a 1-0 lead. With one out, centerfielder Kyle Roberson drove in third baseman David Scoggin on a ground out to give the Eagles the initial advantage.

Winthrop added a run in the fifth, two in the seventh and four in the eighth, while limiting Seton Hall to two ninth-inning runs.

Buddy Hausmann (0-2) gave up two runs on six hits in six innings to take the loss for the Pirates. He struck out two and walked four.

SHU relief pitcher Dan Perez gave up six runs (four earned) in the seventh and eighth innings as the Eagles added to their lead. He yielded four hits and also struck out one.

Perez gave up a pinch hit two-out, two-run home run to Jacob Dempsey in the seventh inning. The Eagles pushed four more across in the eighth to take an 8-0 lead.

In game two, Winthrop scored 10 runs on 11 hits while limiting Seton Hall to one run on five hits as the Eagles cruised to a 10-1 win.

Daniel Carte led Winthrop at the plate with a three for four performance, driving in a season-high five runs. Carte scored twice and also walked once.

Matt Repec, Scoggin and Tommy Lentz each added two hits a piece with Lentz driving in a career-high three runs.

Jeff Reeves (1-1) gave up one run on three hits in five and two-thirds innings to pick up the win, his first of the season. He struck out four and walked six.

The Eagles got things going early, plating two in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. With two outs, Carte singled up the middle to drive in Dempsey and Scoggin to give Winthrop a 2-0 lead.

Seton Hall pushed a run across in the second inning to cut the Eagles’ lead to 2-1.

The Eagles added three in the fifth and five in the sixth as they cruised to victory.

Winthrop improved to 8-5 with the pair of wins, while Seton Hall fell to 1-10. The Eagles have won four out of their last five games.

Winthrop returns to action Friday as they take on South Alabama at 7 p.m. at the first day of the 19th Annual Coca Cola Classic at Stanky Field in Mobile, AL. The Eagles will play McNeese State on Saturday at 7 p.m. and Ohio State on Sunday at 12 p.m. in the three day, round robin tournament.
