Nice win for the Buckeyes at home. We are creeping closer to 20...hopefully we make it.

Big win for the buckeyes, especially at home going into the Illinois game. I would hope it would draw a big crowd regardless, but now both our team and the fans have a lot of momentum heading into that game. I sure like whatever Thad Matta is doing at practice, cuz this is a changed ballclub from last year's team.

Sullinger stepped up huge, can't say enough about his play.

Sylvester continues to impress.

Butler responded to my criticism of him last game by turning in a very solid performance (especially in the first half where he was running the offense and calling his own number).

You could see again tonight why Stockman is not in the game anymore. He forced shots when he took them, and seemed to be generally upset during a big win by his team. I doubt Sylvester loves coming off the bench, but you always see him positive and upbeat for everyone else.

We're making waves heading into our matchup with Illinois. And better yet, even if we lose that game, we have a lot of confidence going into the tourney as well. This team has gelled and matured under Matta's direction, and actually has a shot at winning the Big10 tourney.

Earlier in the year I made some disparaging comments about some views of the team because the schedule was so easy. I suppose it is time to say that I was wrong and that the basketball Buckeyes have been a pleasant surprise. I think there is reason for immediate and long-term optimism.

...even though they screwed me out of a lot of vmoney by not covering the spread at scUM-Lite.

Chiclets for Saunders for mentioning Coach Whittenburg and Fordham, my alma mater, after the game...

From John Porentas, over on his forum:

Matt Sylvester played the entire game tonight with a severe case...
(By Mr. Ed on 22:24:20 02/15/05)
...of the flu. Temperature over 101 and nearly lost his lunch a couple of times during time outs, one duing a break in the action while he was on the floot. A VERY gutty performance by Syl.

*****

It seems as though Sylvester is one of those guys who is starting to show more and more improvement this season.

Thumbs up

Matt seems to have that knack for making that big bucket when we need it, at least this year. Against Indiana, he came right off the bench and hit a big three. He has improved leaps and bounds compared to last year. His rebounding has really improved.

Cool

I'm very happy the way the team is progressing. Butler is doing better and better each game. A little story for you all. When Jamar was a freshman starting point guard for the varsity team they were playing Delphos St. Johns at Delphos.[If you have ever been there for a big game, you can appreciate the situation.] Delphos decided to take out defensively Shawnee's 2 and 3 guards who could shoot it well enough that it helped take them to state the year before as Juniors. The game was tight all night and Shawnee was down by two points with under 20 seconds or so. A time out was called and the coach told Jamar to go one on one and score since Delphos was d'ing up the two shooters. Jamar looked at the coach and said, "do you want a 2 or a 3?" The coach said a 2. Of course, he took it to the hole and scored tying up the score against a team/school who had an excellent season. After the game, the head coach joked that he should of asked for the 3, so they didn't have to win it in overtime. It was just amazing the composure he showed in that situation as a 15 year old kid. I believe he would of hit the 3 if asked to take it.

I could add many, many other stories [all true] that would maybe convince those doubters who are still left, that Jamar is the real deal and has played against the best in AAU at the NBA Camp, etc. and is really a rare player who will continue to blossom since it is HIS show running the team now. [atleast more than before] It was hard for him because both Huggins and Obrien told him he would be starting and it was his team. Then, it didn't work out that way. I applaud that he kept his frustration inside and kept working. The end result is that we, the fans, are just now starting to see what he can do. Way to be mature about it Jamar and keep fighting for team.

Just for your information. If you want Jamar to show more emotion on the court, forget it. He is the most stone faced player I've ever seen. But don't ever mistake that for lack of intensity.

I've wanted to share these thoughts for a month, but didn't want to seem like a Jamar fan who was frustrated about his playing time.

Never mind, I am a Jamar fan.

Go Bucks.
