I too felt this way but time will tell. Matta will play all of the recruited kids in the pre-Big Ten play and see who steps up their game. There is no doubt that Lauderdale has the body and potential to get serious playtime. He will have to seperate himself in the preseason so he alone will determine his Big Ten playtime.

At the very least, it will be nice to not be so thin in the front court this year. If nothing else, Dallas can be a big body to throw around on defense when we have guys in foul trouble.

Lauderdale has the potential to be an All-Big type player down the road, but with KK, Hunter, Twigs and Madsen taking most of the minutes...not this year.

I'll be really happy if he can put in one 3-5 min shift a game going all out in place of Koufos/Hunter/Terwilliger at C. I think we can definetly put his defensive prowess to good use. I'm interested to see how he progresses on offense this year.
I'm thrilled we'll actually have some size to spare this year with Twigs, Madsen, and Lauderdale on the bench.

Just from what was being reported on the BN free boards durng open gyms, Dallas was a beast defensively and Kyle Madsen was the least athletic of the bigs. Yes, we have good depth, but I think Dallas sees more time than Kyle.

I think they are 2 different types of players. KM can play both 4 and 5 whereas I think Dallas is limited to just the 5 position.

I honestly don't expect Madsen or DL to play a lot of minutes this year. The first 3 bigs (KK, Hunter, Twig) are all guys that can play both the 4 and the 5. If you figure that 2 of those guys play 28 minutes and the other plays 20 or so, that doesn't leave a whole lot of minutes for the other 2 guys. I also expect that Wallace and Lighty may get some time at the 4 against some of the smaller lineups we face. I think if DL and KM get on the floor, its going to be because they show they are better than the senior Twig. I imagine they will get some time early in the season to show what they can do, but I think by the time the B10 season rolls around we will be looking at that 3 man rotation for the 2 big spots.

I agree that Lighty will occasionally soak up some minutes playing post defense when he matches up well against a smallish post player that Matta wants to shut down. I disagree with the notion that the two post positions will be filled by a tight rotation of 3 players. I do agree with your assessment that KK and Hunter will start and play the most minutes with Terwilliger as the first big man off the bench. I just don't think it's realistic to expect that Matta will get by with a simple rotation of 3 players on the front line. It is just very common to have a big man draw two quick fouls in the first half and have to sit him the rest of the half (conventional wisdom). There will be many instances when because of fouls one or more of those first 3 bigs will be out of the rotation and you will find DL and KM getting some minutes. Especially in those physical big 10 games where you need bodies to absorb fouls. It will be very interesting to see who comes up ahead in the play time pecking order between DL and KM. Madsen has had so much time to mature and develop practicing against big time college talent that one would have to assume that gives him a nice experience advantage. Lauderdale has such strength, size, and wing span that it's hard to imagine him not finding a niche on this team. It's going to be fun to see how it shakes out. My best guess for minutes per game...
KK 28
OH 26
MT 15
DL 8
KM 3
ask me tomorrow I'll probably have a slightly different answer.
I expect KK and OH to play longer stretches and the other three to play in short burst with frequent substitutions between them.

I agree there will be games that DL or KM will be part of the rotation such as when we play a banging team like MSU or if one of the top 3 get into foul trouble, but I'm not going to anticipate minutes for a player by assuming foul trouble amongst the starters. From last year I just remember that we faced teams that more often gave us trouble on the perimeter with their 4 when we went big, than they did in the post when we went small. I'm anticipating that the FR guards are going to be more ready to contribute at their positions than DL is at his, so if we get into foul trouble with 2 of the top 3 bigs, then we might be more likley to go small assuming we aren't playing a team like MSU. I think Madsen is going to have difficulty seeing the floor much because he is basically a slightly bigger Twig with considerably less athleticism. I could see DL getting more minutes for his inside defensive/rebounding presence, but I do think the rotation will be fairly tight amongst the top 3 by the time conference play starts. I think we will want to have Twig the senior on the floor for 20 minutes than DL the freshman on for 8-10. I also think KK and Hunter in conference play are going to get as many minutes as they can be effective with. Maybe 28 is a goog number for them (and about what I am thinking as well), but I cou | |
