The "they must have known" thing is the same easy claim for MoC and the UF guys and the USC deal now. Easy to say, but who really can prove that at this point?

Coming from Youngstown I think that Jim Tressel SHOULD have known that Mo C was going to be a headache (in fact he did know what Clarett was all about from JT's days at YSU). I've argued that if Mo C was an 09 recruit he wouldn't be recruited by Ohio State. JT doesn't need to take risks on players like that now that he's established himself. But given Jim Tressel was brand new and you have the USA Today POY right down the road I don't think he had a choice (at the time).

Come on thomps...it's much more than a $400 TV. If all he got was a $400 TV then this discussion isn't happening. If TP was still driving that Corvette around then I would be worried. He borrowed a car for prom. There isn't a hypothetical way that it's ok because it is ok no matter which way you slice it. If he shows up for school in June in a tricked out Escalade then I expect someone to look into it.
It's thousands of dollars being handed out to players at USC. Ohio State self reports $500 to Troy Smith and espin calls for Jim Tressel and Andy Geiger to be fired. You don't think that OSU could cover up $500 for their starting QB if they wanted to? Reggie Bush gets a house and Mayo gets $30,000 and...(crickets). All USC is showing us is that if you don't self report and just plead ignorance then nothing will happen to you.
Again, there is nothing....NOTHING... of any substance surrounding Terrelle Pryor. There is a bunch of stuff that bloggers and writers and [censored]ed off fans threw against the wall hoping to have something stick.
Again, sorry that USC's star players seem to be getting well paid by these runners, but don't try and bring Ohio State players into the discussion because there really isn't anything there to discuss. Has anyone peeked their head into Joe McKnight's dorm room lately?

Sorry, but it's not just OSU fans (or fans of other big-name schools) who are saying "OMG how could USC not have known?" Check out Forde's article on espn.com and Wynn's article on cnnsi.com if you don't believe me. This isn't at witch hunt being conducted by USC haters; it's a realization that there have been some really shady things going on at USC lately and that USC's strategy of "We didn't know" isn't going to cut it anymore.

Bingo. That's why these problems at USC are so important to the future of the NCAA.

I always thought "We Are SC" was a cheer.
Turns out it is their verbatim response to NCAA inquiries.

The $400 tv is the one thing that was pointed to in this thread as tangible evidence that USC should've seen. Mayo is alleged to have taken $30k over 4 years, but he's only been at USC for one. Thus, we don't really know right now what should've sparked further investigation and whether it did. People instantly pointed to the dorm tv.
If you watch the ESPN report, there was allegedly a lot of stuff given to Mayo's friends and not to Mayo directly. And the report says that the money from the agency dried up last summer before Mayo got to USC. That is when the fake charity stuff allegedly began.
So its hard to say what was plain and when it was. The NCAA conducted a hearing on the whole thing before Mayo came, so I think that shows just how under-the-surface things were.

I've seen it all now. A post on BP citing ESPN to show that a given response is reasonable? I can only imagine what kind of response that article would've drawn here if it was about tOSU and came out after the Troy Smith incident. In fact, I probably could go find out if I spent my day in the ESPN/ OSU forum archives.

You are mistaken because USC is the NCAA's cash cow and the NCAA would never punish USC. And ESPN would never investigate USC.
Edit: And the answer for NCAA penalties is 1957, 1959, 1982, 1986, and 2001. No real correlation.
