NDials Wants Scholie
Dials says he will transfer if he doesn't get a permanent scholorship because he can't afford it. OB told him to be patient--still waiting on Malik and 2 JUCO guards who I guess are fallbacks for Malik(paraphrased from today's Dispatch).
This is a tough one. I like NDials and his hustle, and his shooting, but I'm just not sold on him as a scholorship player(I AM sold on the fact that he could definitely be an asset as a walkon).
Of course, we have 2 schollies to give, so I guess OB is going after Malik AND a JUCO guy? Or maybe he's going after a JUCO big guy as well? I don't think we're in on Luke Nevill anymore, the 7-0 Aussie guy who's a HS senior. Anyway, tough situation...can't blame Dials or Coach for looking at it the way they do.

I agree Nixon, I think NDials is a player who can give you some quality minutes off the bench to spell others, but I don't think he is a bona fide starter at this level.
I think both OB and NDials are doing the right things. If OB thought NDials had what it took to help OSU get back to the top then I think he would offer the scholarship.
NDials may believe that he is the bird in hand that is worth the two in the bush. If that is the case then he should shop his wares.

This is a tough one for me, also. I know Nick pretty well, and went to school with his dad. I think that if you go down the line and give the scholorship to the most deserving, then he should have one. I also believe that had it not been for the wrist and ankle injuries,he would have started the 2nd half of the season at point guard.
I also know that, if he doesn't get one, his family has the money to pay for his schooling. So we'll see what happens. My guess is that if he doesn't get one then he will leave. It doesn't make sense to his dad to have to pay for an education that he (Nick) could get free at a smaller school.

I agree with that. But that's not really the question. The question is, will he do more for our team then the recruit we'd give it to? I mean, if you went down the line, you probably wouldn't be too thrilled about having Marinchick on schollie, or Fuss maybe. I would go with Dials over them(although Marinchick will be much needed big man depth this year--unless Nick's schollie goes to a big man). Confusing. I'm glad I'm not the coach.

Nick has to do what he feels is right for himself and his family. The way I've always looked at is if you have and extra scholarship like we did this year, give it to the walk-on but it's just for that year. If the walk-on player wants to keep the scholarship, they must earn it. I don't feel N. Dials has done at this point, although if he hadn't been injured, he might have.
In the past, walk-ons in football and basketball were occasionally given to players in their Jr or Sr seasons so he's already lucky to get one his 1st season.
