Jermyl Jackson-Wilson to transfer

Freshman forward Jermyl Jackson-Wilson has been released from his basketball scholarship at Ohio State and will transfer after the spring quarter, coach Thad Matta confirmed yesterday.

"We met with Jermyl, and he’s looking for an opportunity where there’s more immediate playing time," Matta said. "I appreciate everything he did for us this year. We’ll do whatever we can to help him."

The Dispatch was unable to contact Jackson-Wilson.

An undersized power forward at 6 feet 5 and 210 pounds, Jackson-Wilson signed with Ohio State before Matta was hired last summer and was not suited to the new coach’s offensive system. Matta, unlike his predecessor, Jim O’Brien, requires his power forwards to play on the perimeter as well as inside.

Jackson-Wilson played in only 11 of the Buckeyes’ 32 games and averaged 2.3 minutes.

Jackson-Wilson’s departure leaves Ohio State with three scholarships available for next season, but Matta said that as of yesterday he did not anticipate adding another player during the spring signing period, which ends May 18.

That could change if a transfer becomes available that the coaches think could help the program next season. Otherwise, they will bank the scholarships and have six to offer a deep and talented recruiting class in 2006. One scholarship for that class already has been claimed, by Dayton Dunbar guard Daequan Cook, who committed in March.

This has been in the works for awhile now. Its no suprise, Jermyl just does not fit Matta's system. I wish him well.

I should note that this transfer gives us a little more flexibility with the 06 class, because from what I am hearing we are not going to sign anyone in the late signing period.

I think we all knew this was coming. He is a solid defender but just had no offense, and for his size in Matta's system, that just doesn't work. I hope he catches on somehwere else...good luck Jermyl!

Doesn't the NCAA limit you to 5 per season?

I thought so too, however (according to an article I found) if Jermyl Jackson-Wilson was on track to graduate in 5 years they could reaward his (within two years). This would give them 6 for next year, etc. per: "The 5/8 limit would resume in 2003-04 with one change. Schools would be allowed an extra scholarship when the number of players who graduate in any given year, combined with those who leave school early but are on track to graduate within five years, exceeds the number of scholarships given during that same year. The extra scholarship must be used within the following two years. Overall men's basketball scholarship limits would remain at 13. The "5/8 rule" is a rule that limits the number of men's basketball scholarships to eight in a consecutive two-year period, with no more than five in one of those two years."

See article:

It's anybody's guess what will happen when the APR kicks in.

Another question: How did Bob Knight give out 8 schlorships:
Signings leave Tech over limit

Fort Worth Star Telegram
April 14, 2005

Texas Tech added two players Wednesday to an already bulging men's basketball recruiting class, and it is unclear how the Red Raiders plan to meet the NCAA maximum of 13 scholarship players per season.

L.D. Bell guard Alan Voskuil and forward John Plefka from Santa Fe Community College in Palatka, Fla., signed letters of intent to play for Tech, giving the class eight players. As of Wednesday afternoon, Houston Westbury Christian forward Jeremy Barr had a scholarship offer from Tech but was also considering Southern California and Colorado.

Tech has six returning scholarship players, and Randy Farley, spokesman for Tech coach Bob Knight, said he has not been told any are planning to transfer or leave the program.

Have to chuckle at that one. Bobby Knight needs someone to leave his team? Oh my goodness! How will he ever deal with that situation?

They removed this limit last year I think it was. Basically, after the year where Arizona had four or five starters leave on top of their seniors that were not starters, they changed it so that you can sign more than fiver per season if you have the scholarships available.
