Bob Huggins (official thread)

Not Buckeye involvement but it will affect Buckeye Basketball.

As of 8:38 p.m. UC is having a press conference with Huggins right now. Bob Huggins is not being terminated but has been given the opportunity to retire or return for the next basketball season. He has been informed that his contract will NOT be renewed after next season. He has chosen to stay and fulfill his contractual obligation.

The recruiting season for UC next season will be awful unless a big name coach has been hired to replace Huggins by then. UC will be losing a lot of boosters according to 700 WLW. More to come.

Since Huggins (apparently) only has two years left, I would guess he'll be going after some JC transfers this year (2005/2006) so he'll be as good as possible in the 2006/2007. He may not care if he leave the "cupboard bare" for the following year.

Who knows, a lot can change in two years. The UC president and/or athletic director could leave or change their minds; and he could still end up getting a contract extension and stay at UC.

Huggins' days at Cincinnati numbered
Tuesday, August 23, 2005, 12:32 p.m. ET

Bob Huggins has won 399 basketball games as head coach at Cincinnati - which is about the number of rumors that have developed this offseason about his job security. Half the time, the rumors have him fired. The other half, he's getting a contract extension.

The latest is more than a rumor, though. The university is making a hard push to remove Huggins from his position as Bearcats head coach, and the result of that effort could be known before the end of the week.

Huggins was offered a minimal buyout of his remaining two contract years following the Bearcats' 25-8 finish in the 2004-05 season. Huggins earns more than $1 million annually, but the school offered only the guaranteed portions of his contract -- a total of $1.4 million for the two years. Huggins opted to decline that offer and coach the two remaining seasons.

He previously had a four-year rollover deal that extended his contract term every summer, but university president Nancy Zimpher opted not to roll over the contract following Huggins' DUI citation in June 2004. Huggins and his representation asked that the rollover be reinstated following the basketball team's strong performance last season, but that approach was rejected. The Bearcats are to play their first season in the Big East Conference in 2005-06. Huggins has been their coach since 1998 and has led the program to 14 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, the third-longest active streak and fifth-best in history. That has not mattered to Zimpher. She wants a new direction for Cincinnati basketball. It seems any direction will do.

Not a rumor anymore. Take 3mm and leave or get fired in 24 hours and get only 2mm. Nancy Zimpher is a lying BITCH and I am not even a UC fan.

Agreed. Nancy Zimpher and K-Hoe have a lot in common....Both are complete idiots that need to keep their muff diving noses OUT of their Athletic Departments....

I have no problem with the removal of Huggins...but its freaking AUGUST...you can't fire your basketball coach in AUGUST!...that's the most assinine thing I have ever heard of.

Renaissance could go either way
Apparently, this won't last until the end of the week--it looks like Huggins has 24 hours.

ESPN.com

Bob Huggins' successful, but tumultuous tenure with the Cincinnati Bearcats reportedly is nearing a sudden end.

The Cincinnati Enquirer, citing sources close to the situation, reported on its Web site Tuesday that Huggins will be forced to resign or be fired in the next 24 hours. Associate head coach Andy Kennedy will be asked to replace Huggins in the interim, according to the newspaper.

A source told the newspaper that Huggins will be sent a letter Tuesday, asking the coach to accept a $3 million buyout of the remaining two years on his deal. According to the report, Huggins would have 24 hours to accept or he would be "terminated without cause" and his compensation would be reduced to $2 million.

Huggins was arrested last June and pleaded no contest to driving under the influence. He was ordered to attend a three-day intervention program, and the school suspended him with pay for two months.

In May, the university had said it would honor the final two years of Huggins' contract. However, the university had stripped a rollover provision from Huggins' contract after his arrest and no-contest plea for drunken driving last year. The provision automatically added a year onto his contract each summer, keeping it a four-year deal.

Huggins had to decide whether to accept it or take a buyout provision in his contract.

"I plan on fulfilling my contract," Huggins said in May. "I love the players. I think I have an obligation to them, certainly to their families and the fans in the city of Cincinnati.

"People here have been unbelievable. They've supported me, certainly, when I needed support. They've always been there," he said.

Huggins is 399-127 in 16 seasons at Cincinnati, which he rebuilt into a nationally prominent program after years of disarray. His teams have made 14 consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament and reached the Final Four in 1992.

The program also has a history of player arrests and infractions. The program went on two years' probation in 1998 after the NCAA concluded there was a lack of institutional control over the men's basketball program.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
