Happy for Groce - but you never know how much an assistant can mean to a program till he's gone. Certainly hope Matta's back is back.

Congrats to Groce. I'm sure he will find much success as he continues his journey.

I'm a bit torn on this, because Groce's leaving is a huge loss for tOSU, and is a huge hire for OU. The consolation (for me, anyway) is that it was only a matter of time before someone offered him a top job, and I'm happy to see that the Bobcats did it, rather than some other team I wouldn't care much to follow.
If Matta and Groce meet on the basketball court, I'm hoping that it will be in the Sweet 16.

Matta encouraged assistant to pursue job

The Columbus Dispatch
ATHENS, Ohio -- Everywhere Thad Matta has gone the previous eight years in building winning college basketball teams, assistant John Groce has dutifully followed.
Late last week, though, Matta didn't drop a hint that Groce should look into applying for the Ohio University men's head coaching job. Matta strongly suggested that Groce would be missing out on something special if he didn't.
"Thad said, 'I don't want to lose you, but it's a great job,' " Groce said. "His question wasn't 'Why would you take the job?' It was 'Why wouldn't you?' "
Groce, who coached under Matta for four years at Ohio State, three at Xavier and one at Butler, left the Buckeyes yesterday to accept a five-year contract with the Bobcats that will pay him a minimum yearly salary of $250,000. He had been making $225,000 with Ohio State.

Not much of a pay increase for the added duties/work/responsibility/pressure, etc. I would have thought that he would be making more than $250K at OU. I guess that after a couple sucessful seasons at OU he'll get a bigger contract.
