Samuel Payne
Class: Freshman
Hometown: Columbus, Ohio
High School: Linden McKinley
Position: Guard
Major: Business
Samuel Payne, a 6-foot-2-inch freshman guard from Columbus, joined the Buckeyes in November 2005 after walkon tryouts.
Payne, a graduate from Linden McKinley High School, was a captain for three seasons. He also was the squad's MVP for two years. Payne also earned Columbus City League first team honors, second team all-district accolades and was an honorable mention all-state honoree during his high school career.
As a senior, Payne averaged 22 points, six rebounds and four assists a game in leading Linden McKinley to the Division II sectional and regional championships. The 2004-05 LMHS team advanced to the Ohio Division II Final Four in March 2005.
As a student, Payne was the Columbus Crew Student Athlete of the Year in 2004 and is a member of the LMHS Academic Hall of Fame after making the honor roll every year of his high school career.
Born March 22, 1987, he is the son of Samuel Payne, Sr., and Suchy Thompson ... after graduating from Ohio State with an education or business degree, he hopes to pursue a graduate degree as well.

Payne is no longer with the team.
That means ten players in practice including Oden. - barely 5 on 5.

OHIO STATE NOTEBOOK
Payne quits to focus on academics
Monday, November 06, 2006
Bob Baptist
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Already down to nine healthy scholarship players for practice and eight for games, the Ohio State men?s basketball team has lost another.
Coach Thad Matta said yesterday that walk-on guard Sam Payne left the team to devote more time to his schoolwork.
Payne, a sophomore from Linden High School, is on an academic scholarship.
"Sam has been phenomenal for us. I hate to see him go, but I do understand," Matta said. "He?s not getting a (basketball) scholarship, and we?re chewing up four hours a day of his time. He wants to focus on the academics."
Payne played sparingly in games but was a valuable practice player, giving the Buckeyes 10 for scrimmaging. Vanderbilt transfer Kyle Madsen of Dublin can practice but not play until next season. Freshman center Greg Oden cannot do either while his right wrist heals from surgery. He is expected back in December or January.
"We?ve got a couple managers that can hop in (practice), a couple coaches that can hop in, and away we go," Matta said. "It?s tough, but you?ve just got to show no weakness and keep moving forward."
Matta, 39, said even he can still go "four or five minutes" in practice. But "they know not to guard me," he said.
Shade of gray
Details have not been finalized, but Matta confirmed that a benefactor has offered a donation ? about $6,000 ? that could be used to purchase a set of gray uniforms. The Buckeyes have not worn gray as a primary color since Randy Ayers was coach in the mid-1990s.
Matta said the uniforms have not arrived and he does not know if they will before the team opens the regular season Friday night in the BCA Classic in Value City Arena. Asked if the Buckeyes would wear the uniforms in the tournament if they had them, he smiled and said, "Maybe."

One-time Buckeye walks off with fond memories
Thursday, March 29, 2007 Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- Here's some knowledge with which to impress your Buckeyes friends before Saturday's national semifinal between Ohio State and Georgetown: Who are the five players on the front cover of Ohio State's 2006-07 basketball media guide?
Seniors Ron Lewis and Ivan Harris, juniors Jamar Butler and Matt Terwilliger, and . . . Sam Payne.
Who? Maybe you get that Greg Oden and the other freshmen were bumped to the back cover, but Sam Payne? Never heard of him.
