Vols & Buckeyes Home and Home Set

Another challenging addition to the schedule

UT has deal for home-and-home series against Ohio State Vols will play at Columbus in '07
By BY MIKE GRIFFITH, knsgriff@aol.com
May 6, 2006
Tennessee men's basketball coach Bruce Pearl showed the country he was ready for the big-time last season. Now, Pearl is ready for the Vols to show they're ready to tangle with the Big Ten.
Tennessee has reached a preliminary agreement to play Ohio State in a home-and-home series beginning this season in Columbus, Ohio, with a return game in Knoxville during the 2007-08 season.
It will be Tennessee's first meeting with the Buckeyes since 1979 when No. 2 Ohio State scored a 91-65 win in Columbus. The last time UT played a team from the Big Ten was on Nov. 21, 2001. The Vols defeated No. 18 Wisconsin 66-56.
The Buckeyes are ranked in the top five of most early top-25 projections and feature freshman Greg Oden, the No. 1 recruit in this year's class and a likely lottery NBA draft pick in 2007.
UT recruit Wayne Chism made a name for himself by slowing down Oden in an AAU tournament in Arkansas in April of 2005, and he might be asked to do it again.
Pearl, who was named The Sporting News national coach of the year after leading Tennessee to a 22-8 record and the SEC East Division title, said the match-up cements another year he can keep his running joke with Vols' associate head coach Tony Jones, who helps with the scheduling.
"Every year, I complain our schedule is too tough, and every year I accuse Tony of setting up a schedule like that because he wants my job,'' Pearl said. "And then every year, after the season, he says 'I told you so.' "
That was the case last season, when the Vols shocked the nation and showed a sign of things to come with a 95-78 upset over then-No. 6 Texas.
Pearl's success has given Tennessee enough stature that Ohio State was interested in the RPI-friendly game, and Jones made the deal go smoothly, thanks to his relationship with Buckeyes coach Thad Matta.
"I was going to coach with Thad at Miami of Ohio after I left Buffalo,'' Jones said. "But I ended up going to coach at Toledo instead.''
The teams agreed to play the first game in January or February, likely with national television coverage on CBS.
It gives the Vols seven games against six teams in the preseason top 10 of ESPN.com's Andy Katz. In addition to Ohio State, UT plays No. 1 Florida twice, and single games against No. 4 LSU, No. 7 Memphis, No. 8 Texas and No. 9 Alabama.
UT ranked No. 5 in the nation in home attendance last season, but could soar even higher with games against Florida, LSU, Memphis, Texas and Alabama at Thompson-Boling Arena.

New Rule: One of Tennessee's top weapons from last season could lose a little punch if a new rule comes to pass.
According to The Associated Press, the rule that allows a player to call timeout while in the air or falling out of bounds could be eliminated this season.
The Basketball Rules Committee reportedly agreed a change needs to be made and a proposal is being sent to the Playing Rules Oversight Panel for approval on May 30.
The Vols forced numerous turnovers with their inbounds defense last season, many times with the player making the steal calling timeout as he fell out of bounds or leaped to intercept a pass.

Wow by playing North Carolina, Tenessee, and Florida all in the non conforence we are all really going to get to find out how good these freshmen really are. It also gives them the oppertunity to showcase how good they are and really put Ohio State basketball program back on the map.

Im not sure if we are doing a home and home with Cincy, but we are playing them in the 06-07 season and will likely play them in the 07-08 season in their turf.

Matta plans to add series with Tennessee to schedule

Tuesday, May 09, 2006

The Ohio State men’s basketball schedule for next season will include at least one more major-conference opponent.

Coach Thad Matta confirmed yesterday that he has agreed to but not signed a contract for a home-and-home series with Tennessee. The series will begin with a January or February game in Value City Arena, filling one of the Buckeyes’ two byes during the Big Ten schedule.

Matta said he wanted another home game against a major opponent to balance a schedule that has the Buckeyes playing at North Carolina and Florida and meeting Cincinnati in Indianapolis. Iowa State also will visit Columbus.

Ohio State will play at Tennessee during the 2007-08 season.
Tennessee was 22-8 and won the Southeastern Conference Eastern Division last season in Bruce Pearl’s first year as coach.

NCAA cuts short players’ use of tights

Thursday, May 11, 2006

Bob Baptist
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

J.J. Sullinger made his fashion statement.

The NCAA responded with one of its own — and proved once again who wears the pants in the family.

Full-length tights like those Sullinger wore with his Ohio State uniform last season will be prohibited in college basketball next season. The so-called "compression pants" will not be allowed to extend below a player’s uniform shorts.

The NCAA men’s and women’s basketball rules committees took that and other action last week. Also nipped in the bud was a trend of players calling a timeout while leaping out of bounds with the ball to avoid a turnover.

The playing rules oversight panel, which has final say on all matters, is expected to ratify both proposals May 30.

"The committee really wants student-athletes on teams to have uniformity of uniforms, if you will," said Heather Perry, NCAA associate director of playing rules administration. "The ankle tights, unless they’re for medical purposes, which the committee is unaware of at this time, is not part of looking uniform."

The committees also banned arm sleeves below the elbow "unless worn for medical purposes."

Sullinger broke out his leggings Jan. 30 against Florida A &M after seeing Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Allen Iverson wearing them in NBA games.

"I thought I might have been the first in college basketball to wear them. I started doing it just to have something else to talk about," Sullinger said.

"Je’Kel (Foster) was supposed to wear them with me. I bought him a pair when I was out at the mall, but he backed out at the last second."

Sullinger said he checked the NCAA Web site to make sure the attire was legal.

"All it said was it had to be the same color as the jersey," he said.

Sullinger wore white tights at home and scarlet on the road — and heard about it from fans.

"They called me ‘Peter Pan’ at Michigan State, and ‘ballerina,’ " he said.

"They said, ‘Take off your leotard.’ "

Sullinger recently worked out for the Houston Rockets and said his agent, Richard Katz of Cincinnati, is trying to schedule workouts with other NBA teams.

Former Ohio State teammate Terence Dials, the Big Ten player of the year last season, has been invited to participate in an NBA predraft camp June 6-10 in Orlando, Fla., Sullinger said. The draft is June 28.
