BELGRADE, Serbia - Corey Fisher (Villanova / Bronx, N.Y.) scored 15 points and Deon Thompson (North Carolina / Torrance, Calif.) added 12 to go with nine boards as the 2009 USA Men?s World University Games Team (2-1) earned a 67-63 hard-fought defensive battle over Russia (1-2) in the 2009 Serbia International Invitational on Monday night in Belgrade.

In addition to Fisher and Thompson, Da'Sean Butler (West Virginia / Newark, N.J.) and Robbie Hummel (Purdue / Valparaiso, Ind.) added eight points each and Jarvis Varnado (Mississippi State / Brownsville, Tenn.) posted seven points and six rebounds, while Evan Turner (Ohio State / Chicago, Ill.) grabbed eight boards.

?The guys got it done tonight with hustle opportunities,? said USA and University of Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan. ?(Evan) Turner, (Robbie) Hummel and Deon (Thompson), those guys, especially at the end, they were everywhere. Corey (Fisher) and Talor Battle. I just really like the way they stuck their noses in there.?

Evan Turner is scheduled to play for the United States in the World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia. The team opens play Friday against Finland.

Had he had a change of heart three months ago, Evan Turner could have hit the lottery last week in the NBA draft.

He was projected as a mid-first round pick before he decided not to enter, but he said a couple of advisers close to him told him he could go higher than that.

He could strike gold regardless this summer.

By virtue of deciding to return to Ohio State for his junior year, Turner was invited to try out for the U.S. team that will compete in the World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia.

The 6-foot-7 guard not only made Team USA, he was one of the standouts at the tryouts two weeks ago in Colorado Springs, Colo. Turner also has played well in pre-tournament exhibitions. He had 16 points and six rebounds in a loss to Serbia on Sunday. In yesterday's win over Russia he had two points and eight rebounds.

The Americans open pool play Friday against Finland. The championship game is July 11.

"To play for your country is the opportunity of a lifetime," Turner said. "If I win a gold medal, that would be so cool."

BELGRADE, Servia-Four players scored in double digits and the 2009 USA Men?s World University Games Team (1-0) held Finland (1-1) scoreless over the final 8:50 as the USA opened World University Games play with a 87-40 victory on Friday night in Belgrade, Serbia.

Craig Brackins (Iowa State / Palmdale, Calif.) and Corey Fisher (Villanova / Bronx, N.Y.) paced the balanced attack with 12 points apiece, Talor Battle (Penn State / Albany, N.Y.) was perfect from the field and finished with 11 points on 4-of-4 shooting, while Robbie Hummel (Purdue / Valparaiso, Ind.) notched 10 points in a game that saw all 12 team members contribute to the scoring column.

?We showed our guys a little about Finland in our scouting report, but, obviously, we didn?t have a lot,? said USA and University of Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan. ?If we don?t learn to study when we are on the bench and then execute on the floor, things can get away from us in a hurry. The thing I like about our team, and I?ve told them from day one, is our guys do a great job of observing from the bench. Giving up two points in the fourth quarter shows that our guys made the adjustments.

?We shot 9-of-21 (from 3-point). That?s 27 points on 21 shots. Anytime you can make more points from your threes than you took shots, obviously, that?s pretty good. If it?s there we take it, but I liked some of the threes where we penetrated, drew the help and then kicked to our teammates. We got some pretty good looks.?

In a well-balanced team effort that saw all 12 players score, including seven in double digits, the 2009 USA Men's World University Games Team (2-0) out-gunned South Korea (0-2) 113-76 on the Fourth of July in Belgrade, Serbia.

The U.S. advances to the second round, where it will face Greece (1-1), which finished second in Group A, on July 6 (2:00 p.m. EDT), and Group A first place finisher Serbia (2-0) on July 7 (2:00 p.m. EDT). Finland (1-1) also advanced to Group I second round action.

James Anderson (Oklahoma State / Junction City, Ark.) and Quincy Pondexter (Washington / Fresno, Calif.) led the USA with 14 points apiece; Talor Battle (Penn State / Albany, N.Y.), Lazar Hayward (Marquette / Buffalo, N.Y.) and Deon Thompson (North Carolina / Torrance, Calif.) contributed 12 points each; while Trevor Booker (Clemson / Whitmire, S.C.) and Jarvis Varnado (Mississippi State / Brownsville, Tenn.) added 11 points apiece. Behind 17 points from Deon Thompson (North Carolina / Torrance, Calif.), the 2009 USA Men?s World University Games Team (3-0) overran Greece (1-2) in the second half and came away with a 108-77 victory in second round action on Monday night in Belgrade, Serbia. With the win, the U.S. is assured a spot in the medal quarterfinals as it can?t finish lower than second in Group I play.

The U.S. faces Serbia (3-0) on July 7 (2:00 p.m. EDT) to close out second round play, and the winner of that contest will advance as the Group I?s No. 1 seed. Group I crosses over in quarterfinal play with Group L, and the U.S. will play either Bulgaria (3-0) or Latvia (3-0), depending on who wins the USA versus Serbia contest and Bulgaria versus Latvia game tomorrow night. The No. 1 seed in Group I will play the No. 2 seed out of Group L, and vice versa.

In addition to Thompson?s 17 points, the well-balanced offensive effort was aided by Lazar Hayward (Marquette / Buffalo, N.Y.) and Quincy Pondexter (Washington / Fresno, Calif.), who scored 13 apiece; James Anderson (Oklahoma State / Junction City, Ark.) and Da'Sean Butler (West Virginia / Newark, N.J.) each scored 10 points; Corey Fisher (Villanova / Bronx, N.Y.) had nine points and Robbie Hummel (Purdue / Valparaiso, Ind.) chipped in eight as all 12 players scored no less than five points each.

The USA scored 12 points off of turnovers, netted 58 points in the paint and had 12 second-chance points. The Americans owned the glass to a tune of 43-22, with Brackins and Butler grabbing seven each; and dished out 23 assists, five from Evan Turner (Ohio State / Chicago, Ill.), and four each from Battle, Butler and Hummel.

How's the tournament going so far, just in general?
It's been a good couple of days all around. We're playing good team ball, we're all playing hard. We're all playing defense, and we're winning - that's the best thing about it.

I understand that Bo Ryan (Wisconsin) is coaching the team. Pretty intense guy. What's it like playing for him?
He's done a good job. He's an old-school type of coach. He definitely doesn't take any BS, and you're held accountable for everything you do. But he loves the game, he's really passionate, and that's what makes you like playing for him.

somewhat surprised that Evan still thinks about the Sienna game so much. You win as a team and lose as a team. Too bad he is putting so much blame on himself. I like to see the fact that he is rebounding quite a bit which will help him with his all-around game next season

BELGRADE, Serbia - Featuring a barrage of 3-pointers and another well-balanced attack that saw every member of the team score, the 2009 USA Men?s World University Games Team (5-0) advanced to the 2009 World University Games medal semifinals unscathed after bouncing Bulgaria (3-2) 96-66 on Thursday night in Belgrade, Serbia.

The squad set a USA World University Games record with 16 made 3-pointers, wiping out the previous record of 12 set at the ?95 WUGs, and was led from behind the arc by 4-of-6 shooting from Da'Sean Butler (West Virginia / Newark, N.J.) and a 3-of-4 performance from Talor Battle (Penn State / Albany, N.Y.).

?I have played with a lot of great 3-point shooters in my time,? said Butler. ?But everybody on this team is really skilled in a lot of ways ? ball handling, passing, rebounding, everybody is very versatile.?

Five players scored in double digits, led by 15 points from Quincy Pondexter (Washington / Fresno, Calif.). James Anderson (Oklahoma State / Junction City, Ark.), Butler and Lazar Hayward (Marquette / Buffalo, N.Y.) pitched in 12 points each and Battle added 11. Additionally, Robbie Hummel (Purdue / Valparaiso, Ind.) grabbed a game-best 10 rebounds to go with seven points and four assists, and Corey Fisher (Villanova / Bronx, N.Y.) passed off a game-high five assists and scored six points.

?Being together so much without any TV or a lot of American luxuries is really bringing us together, and it?s really crossing over onto the court,? said Pondexter. ?We just really have a common goal to win the gold medal, and we are doing whatever it takes to win.?

The USA will go up against Russia (5-1) in the first medal semifinal game (11:30 a.m. EDT) on July 10, while Serbia (4-1) will face Israel (6-0) in the second semifinal for the right to advance to the July 11 gold medal game. The 2009 USA Men?s World University Games Team (5-1) saw its gold medal hopes slip away in the waning minutes after Russia (6-1) outscored the U.S. 20-9 in the final stanza for the 69-68 win on Friday night in Belgrade, Serbia. The U.S. still has a chance at a medal, however, and will face Israel (6-1) in Saturday?s bronze medal game (12:00 p.m. EDT). Host Serbia (5-1) advanced to the gold medal game against Russia after thumping Israel 82-56.

Corey Fisher (Villanova / Bronx, N.Y.) and Robbie Hummel(Purdue / Valparaiso, Ind.) scored 14 points apiece, while Deon Thompson (North Carolina / Torrance, Calif.) finished the night with a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds.

?That game was hard-fought,? said USA and University of Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan. ?Defensively, look at what we were making them shoot. Of course, they were playing hard too, and look what they did to us. Finding easy baskets in that game was very, very difficult. You have a bad shooting night one game, and then you are on the sideline for the championship game. Now we have to play for the bronze, which is a great opportunity for these guys to bounce back and leave on a winning note.?
