Ohio State-Iowa preview
Sunday, January 6, 2008 4:02 AM

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
OHIO STATE AT IOWA
4 p.m. today
? Where: Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Iowa City
? TV: Big Ten Network
? Radio: WOSU-AM (820)
? Records: Ohio State 10-3 overall, 1-1 Big Ten; Iowa 9-5, 2-1
? Matchup to watch: The Hawkeyes are a veteran team with good inside size and three legitimate three-point threats, so this is a pick-your-poison defensive game. The Buckeyes did a good job of shutting down Michigan beyond the three-point arc Thursday. Keeping Wendy Ausdemore, Kristi Smith and Johanna Solverson in check will be the next test.
? Noteworthy: Iowa upended Minnesota 68-66 in an overtime thriller Thursday in Minneapolis. Krista VandeVenter made the winning shot with 13 seconds remaining, and all five Iowa starters scored in double figures. Ausdemore and Solverson combined to hit 7 of 11 three-point shots. ... The Buckeyes won both meetings against Iowa last season and are 8-0 against the Hawkeyes under coach Jim Foster. Freshman center Jantel Lavender leads the Big Ten in rebounding (9.8 per game) and has six double-doubles in 13 games. Sophomore point guard Shavelle Little has 11 steals in her past two games. Freshman guard Alison Jackson is expected to be back in uniform today. She missed the Michigan game to clear up an academic issue.
? Next: vs. Indiana, 7 p.m. Thursday, Value City Arena

Ohio State women
Buckeyes ready to go back to work vs. a familiar foe

By Jim Massie
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Life without academically ineligible forward Star Allen resumed for the Ohio State women's basketball team yesterday as the team prepared for its trip to Iowa City.
The news apparently caught nobody by surprise.
"You knew it was coming," coach Jim Foster said. "The team was prepared for it weeks ago."
Whatever emotional ripples remained for the 21st-ranked Buckeyes (10-3, 1-1) were lost in the preparation for today's Big Ten game against the Hawkeyes (9-5, 2-1).
Iowa sports one of the most veteran teams in the conference and what the Hawkeyes like to do is hardly a secret.
"I expect a lot of threes for the game," senior guard Marscilla Packer said. "I think we can push the ball on them a lot. They're big and I think we can beat them down the floor. But our main focus right now is to get a win on the road."

No. 21 OSU women hold off Iowa
Associated Press
Monday, January 07, 2008
IOWA CITY, Iowa ? Ashlee Trebilcock scored 25 points to help No. 21 Ohio State beat Iowa 73-65 on Sunday.
Ohio State built a 17-point halftime lead, shooting 61.3 percent from the field. The Buckeyes (11-3, 2-1 Big Ten) built the lead to 19 before they had to hold off a furious Iowa rally to win their ninth straight over the Hawkeyes (9-6, 2-2).
Kachine Alexander cut the Buckeyes' lead to 6 on a layup with 4:15 remaining. Johanna Solverson drove baseline for a lay-up to slice the lead to 63-59, but Iowa wouldn't get any closer as the Buckeyes made 10 of their last 13 free throws to pull away late.
Kristi Smith led Iowa with 20 points.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
OSU holds on at end
Free throws down stretch beat Iowa
Monday, January 7, 2008 12:01 AM
By Jim Massie
The Columbus Dispatch
As has been its habit this season, the lull came knocking for the Ohio State women's basketball team yesterday afternoon in Carver-Hawkeye Arena, but this time the 21st-ranked Buckeyes slammed the door in the face of a Big Ten rival. Ashlee Trebilcock and Marscilla Packer combined to hit six consecutive free throws in the final 42 seconds to enable OSU to preserve a 73-65 victory over an Iowa team that had sliced a 19-point deficit to four with under a minute to play. At the end, the Hawkeyes (9-6, 2-2) were forced to send the Buckeyes (11-3, 2-1) to the free-throw line where they could hope for misses. Trebilcock, who led OSU with a career-high 25 points, disappointed them by connecting on the first two. Packer followed with the final four to ice the win.
