Ohio State women fall to Purdue
Friday, February 8, 2008
By CLIFF BRUNT
AP SPORTS WRITER
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. ? Purdue gave its NCAA tournament hopes a much-needed boost.
FahKara Malone scored a career-high 23 points, and Purdue beat No. 19 Ohio State 68-67 to remain in a tie for the Big Ten lead Thursday night.
The win was important because the Boilermakers (13-10, 9-3 Big Ten) hadn't beaten a ranked team this season. The Boilermakers started the season 6-8, and hit rock bottom with a 100-50 loss to Connecticut, one of their three losses to top-10 teams.
Malone said the experience against the best teams in college basketball is paying off now. Purdue has won four straight, and is 7-2 since the loss to Connecticut.
"This is a testimony to that first half of the season, playing all those ranked teams, playing all those tough teams," she said. "It definitely just prepared us for the most important part of the season, which is conference."

Women's basketball: Boiling Boilermaker uses anger to sink OSU
Friday, February 8, 2008 3:08 AM
By Jim Massie
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- FahKara Malone didn't like having her pocket picked. Stripped of the ball three times in the first half by Ohio State sophomore guard Shavelle Little, Malone answered with a clutch 23-point performance to lift Purdue to a 68-67 victory last night and knock the 19th-ranked Buckeyes out of a first-place tie in the Big Ten women's basketball standings.
Malone's sharpshooting and energy helped the Boilermakers (13-10, 9-3) erase a 14-point first-half deficit and slip past the Buckeyes (17-6, 8-4) in the final minute.
A competitive light turned on for the sophomore guard as soon as Little took the ball away from her early in the first half.
"It made me very angry," Malone said. "I'm not going to lie. She had long arms. She did a great job on me. But it definitely made me angry and made me want to go after their team and get some buckets on offense."
She responded by hitting 5 of 7 attempts from behind the three-point line. The biggest occurred with 1:24 remaining and the Buckeyes leading 65-63. The shot set up a wild final minute.

Tough, tough loss. But what a game...exciting start to finish.
It was a very physical game and I think we were on the short end of several "no-calls".
Lavendar came out on fire, but I think she wore down late first half, then the physicality of the game play kept her out of rythum the rest of the way, even though she still scored in batches. (I thought she could have taken a charge on Purdue's last possesion, but she bailed out instead). Still a great game by her, and I can't imagine how good she's going to be after all is said and done.
Little was a thief! Man! she can pick a pocket!!!
The inconsitancy on this team kills them (seems very similar to the Men's squad) but with the youth on this team, I can't wait until next season (not to give up on this one mind you)...and the next...etc. The future is very bright for the Lady Bucks.
Despite the loss, it was a very fun game to watch! Get 'em next time, ladies!
