Buckeyes not upset by getting sixth seed
Tuesday, March 18, 2008 Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- For Ohio State, less respect is better. A year after losing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament as a No. 4 seed, and two years after getting upset in the second round as a No. 1 seed, the Buckeyes were handed a No. 6 seed Monday night.
Coach Jim Foster will take this, because at least this 6 is on an upswing, adding players instead of losing them.
"Two years ago, that team was good and we had a bad matchup. That was a disappointment," Foster said of a loss to No. 8 Boston College. "That's the scenario of the NCAA Tournament."
Last year, the Buckeyes never recovered from the season-ending injury to their all-everything guard, Brandie Hoskins.
"We were just a different team after Brandie went down," Foster said. "Brandie was unique. We weren't going to play the way we had played all season long."
Now, when the Buckeyes (22-8) play No. 11 seed Florida State (18-13) in Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday, they should be better than they've been all year. Monday, they got back forward Star Allen, who started 10 games before sitting out the winter quarter, and the last 18 games, with academic issues. She did continue to practice, though. She's back because the winter academic quarter is over, and she got her schoolwork in order.
"I'm a huge fan of the quarter system," Foster said with a smile.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Great expectations really didn't accompany the moments leading up to the announcement last night that the Ohio State women's basketball team had drawn a sixth seed for the NCAA Tournament. The co-Big Ten champion Buckeyes (22-8) will play 11th-seeded Florida State (18-13) at 10:30 p.m. Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa, in the opening round of the New Orleans Regional.

Ohio State women's basketball
Buckeyes buoyed by Allen's return
Talented forward rejoins team in top shape

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
NEAL C. LAURON | Dispatch
Star Allen, right, hasn't played since the start of the winter quarter because of academic issues.
Rumor has it that Ohio State associate strength and conditioning coach Dave Richardson took a special interest in forward Star Allen over the winter quarter while she worked to regain her academic eligibility with the women's basketball team.
A noticeably trimmer Allen rejoined the active roster for the Buckeyes (22-8) this week in preparation for a game against Florida State (18-13) in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament at 10:30 p.m. Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa.
"Star, I thought, did an absolutely terrific job in this quarter of extra conditioning," OSU coach Jim Foster said. "She's about 12 pounds lighter than she was. I think she is very, very focused. She probably wants to prove something. So I'm real comfortable with what she did in the last 10 weeks both academically and athletically."

Another early exit?
If anyone wants to know how bad the Big 10 is right now in women's basketball you can go to ESPN2. The OSU women - champs of the league again - are being dominated by an 11 seed.
Color commentator just stated that FSU is widely considered the last team into the tournament. At least we have closed the deficit from 20 to 12.
