Draft night brings goodbyes with its hellos

Just listen to Conley explain their friendship: "We're best friends, but it's kind of like having a girlfriend. In that first month, you are into it, buying flowers and dressing up and everything. But then it changes, and it's just ... you're both always there. When you are around someone a long time, you don't have to be nice. You don't have to dress up and impress. That's how it is with Greg. We're used to it. He's just always ... there."
This is what will be most different for Conley and Oden. After spending the bulk of their adolescence together -- Conley estimates they were never apart more than three days -- the two emerged from the draft with very different assignments. Oden was the No. 1 pick and is heading to Portland to be the anchor in the middle for a team that could compete for a championship within five years. Conley, the fourth pick, will be 2,300 miles southeast in Memphis, starting at point guard for a team that won a league-low 22 games last season. "Weird," Oden said. "We've been so close for so long. It's just going to be weird."

"Neither one of us is the type to get real emotional or anything," Oden said. "Plus, I don't think it has all really hit either one of us, what it is going to be like now. It's just weird that I will be in one place and Mike will be in another place, in another part of the country."

Oden to miss entire season...
ouch..
Oden, a 7-footer from Ohio State, was found to have torn cartilage during exploratory surgery on his right knee and was operated on by team doctor Don Roberts in Vancouver, Wash. Most microfracture surgeries require eight months to a year for recovery
