True. Also, basketball is a sport where one bad/average recruiting class combined with a few key losses to graduation/NBA will really kill you for a year or two.

I think it's getting more difficult for the media to find out what's actually happening in coaching searches. Because of the increase in salaries and compensation packages, most coaches have agents, and that who the athletic directors deal with initially.
So some reporter who gives payoffs/gratuities to some lower level person in the athletic department to find out who's been contacted, now may only learn about a couple of agents, who may represent 20 different coaches. If the AD talks to the agents on the phone directly, behind closed doors, and the agents are able to not have leaks on their end, the real story about who was contacted/offered may not come out.
And that's fine with me. I love it when somebody gets announced as a new head coach, and the talking heads never saw it coming.

Tradition is a great thing but UK fans may experience one hell of a wakeup call if Donovan tells UK that a program with such momentum, playing in the final four two years in a row, at a better university (academically, there is no comparison between Florida and UK), and in a place where you can go to the beach any day of the week all year long, beats the hell out of chasing the larger than they were in life ghosts of Rupp (and apologies to) Pitino.
Come to UK and you also are going to be recruiting in the Midwest against a host of resurgent power, especially Ohio State.
In my mind, TSUN fans are getting the same rude awakening.
Of course, we weren't in a heckuva lot different shape when we found Tressel and Matta, but I think we will see wildcards in both of these basketball hot seats.

UK, I think is still debatable as to whether you go with young gun, new blood or established high end coach. scUM on the other hand is almost sure to go with a young guy because of the situation and the money they want to spend. IMO scUM must invest millions in an arena project in the very near future, maybe now. I think they lean toward a up and comer, Marquette's coach, SIU's, Marshall's, something like that, then upgrade facilities and let the recruiting begin.. If I was at UK, my ass is on the horn with reps. of Donavan, Matta, Howland, Bill Self, anybody like that that is willing to listen...
I'm not saying any of them would go there, just that UK's boosters will want to know that they don't...

Florida and Ohio State can afford to lose a basketball coach because that's not where the tradition or money is. Kentucky can not.

No offense, my friend, but Gainesville is hours from the nearest beach...
