This will be one of the best BB games we play in this year as well as what could be one of the hardest. They have players who like a 1 on 1 setup and it will be interesting to see how our zone handles that. The Illini had a shadow on Gordon, will we do the same? For sure we have to slow that bad boy down.

Illinois played man-to-man. I do not think that we will use a zone, with a chaser on Gordon, against Indiana. They would kill us in that type of defense... IMO

Game preview

Preview: #13 Indiana vs. OSU

OPPONENT: Indiana might be a tired team after their double overtime thriller against a ?hostile? Illinois team Thursday night. The Hoosiers have lost only three games, but their body of work is not that impressive. Yes, they have lost to UConn, @Wisconsin and Xavier, but their best win is against Illinois State? They play 6 of their next 7 games against the top half of the Big Ten, so their true colors will shine through in the next couple of weeks.
Indiana is the top scoring team in the Big Ten at almost 71 points per game and are virtually tied with OSU for third in overall shooting with 45.6 percent. Indiana shoots 35.1 percent from deep and 74 percent from the line, while averaging 14 assists and 12 turnovers.

Z

BUCKEYE BREAKDOWN: OSU will look to knock off the second ranked opponent this season, going 1-5 thus far with their only win coming against Syracuse in November. Ohio State looked like a true team in the second half against Michigan and will need another complete team effort in order to take down Indiana.
Ohio State stills leads the conference in defensive FG and 3point FG percentage, at 37.4 and 30.1 respectively. They will need to keep the zone flowing and force Indiana into bad shots from the perimeter. The inside has been a weak spot at times this year and D.J. White will be ready to expose it if allowed.
It is no secret Ohio State has trouble making post entry passes, but it will be critical for them to at least try. I believe it was at least 8 minutes into the Michigan game before we saw an attempt inside and OSU needs to go right at D.J. White to get him in foul trouble. Kosta showed some emotion last game and needs an early opportunity to build upon it.

I'm a little late jumping into this thread, but didn't we rip into other schools for having "White outs" and "Black outs", but now that we're doing it, it's an "awesome" idea as one poster put it earlier. I guess hypocracy lives even on BP...

Only if the same people who rip on the other schools are the ones who are calling it awesome. Otherwise its just a differing of opinion.

I agree, a win here would look good but won't mean much if we don't finish off the season strong. With roadies at Indiana and an improved Minny along with the home slate that includes Purdue, Wisky and Sparty. One win here won't do us much if we can't go at least 3-2 in these games and make sure we win the other two contests where we will be road favorites.

Realistically 22-9 (13-5) should get tOSU into the tourney as long as they win at least one game in the Big 10 tourney. A trip to the tourney this year would be a tremendous benefit going into next season. I think it was a huge factor in the run last year that we had a core group of players who had tourney experience to draw from. Without a trip this season we would have a talented yet unexperienced, tournament wise, roster next season.

I have gotten a kick out of the Purdue/Penn State attempts to fire themselves up by color coordinating their fans' attire, and it has definitely run its course as far as I'm concerned. However, I sometimes feel that the crowd at our b-ball home games needs something to get them excited about the game, and if it means wearing the same color of shirts, I'm all for it.

Hopefully they are rowdy tomorrow.

Back in the day, there was Knight
But the Ohio State-Indiana basketball rivalry has cooled in the absence of the combustible coach

"I'm not sure how to answer that question. I've been here one year and part of another year and have only played Ohio State once." ~ Kelvin Sampson, Indiana coach, on whether the Buckeyes are a top rival for the Hoosiers

Indiana leads 59-20
IN COLUMBUS
Ohio State leads 47-33 NEUTRAL SITES
Indiana leads 5-1

Whether revered for his coaching ability or reviled for his behavior, Bob Knight has left a huge void in college basketball with his retirement Monday.
Only time can fully measure what his absence will mean, but one indication will be seen today in Value City Arena when 14th-ranked Indiana plays Ohio State. The once-torrid rivalry between the Buckeyes and Hoosiers has cooled considerably since Knight's acrimonious departure from Bloomington in 2000 after 29 seasons and three national championships.
Today's game remains a big game. It is just not a big game. When Knight coached against his alma mater, it was always an italics-worthy game. Indiana was a perennial national power, Ohio State an occasional one.
Buckeyes radio analyst Ron Stokes, who played against Knight in the 1980s, recalled a 1991 game in St. John Arena in which Ohio State was ranked No. 2 and Indiana No. 4.
"When I walked in the building, I felt an electricity," Stokes said. "It was truly special."

The Elite Eight: Top OSU-Indiana games

Sunday, February 10, 2008 3:43 AM

EIGHT MEMORABLE GAMES IN THE OHIO STATE-INDIANA BASKETBALL RIVALRY:

FEB. 6, 1950

No. 7 Ohio State 56, No. 12 Indiana 55
In the first OSU-IU matchup in which either team was ranked, Dick Schnittker scored 27 points, including 13 of 13 from the foul line, to help rally the Buckeyes from a 10-point deficit with 10 minutes left. The victory was Ohio State's fifth in a 12-game winning streak that propelled the Buckeyes to a No. 2 final ranking.
JAN. 9, 1960

No. 7 Ohio State 96, No. 11 Indiana 95
Larry Siegfried's only field goal won it at the buzzer, capping a Buckeyes comeback from five points down with 43 seconds left. The winning basket followed a timeout in which coach Fred Taylor ordered the Buckeyes to "run the emergency score," a play Ohio State practiced extensively for such critical moments. John Havlicek fed Siegfried for the winning basket. Mel Nowell had a game-high 26 points for the Buckeyes, who went on to win the national championship.

Game preview: Indiana at Ohio State

Sunday, February 10, 2008 3:13 AM

1 p.m. today

? Where: Value City Arena
? TV: CBS
? Radio: WBNS-AM (1460)
? Records: Ohio State 16-7 overall; 7-3 Big Ten; Indiana 19-3, 8-1
? Matchup to watch: Ohio State coach Thad Matta said he didn't switch to a box-and-one defense last week against Iowa, and put David Lighty on red-hot Justin Johnson, because he wasn't sure the Buckeyes knew the defense well enough. Or was Matta just saving it for Eric Gordon? If the Big Ten scoring leader finds the cracks in the OSU zone, look out. He is one of three Hoosiers (with Armon Bassett and Jordan Crawford) shooting 40 percent or better from outside the arc in Big Ten play.
? Noteworthy: The Buckeyes have won 19 consecutive home games against Big Ten teams. ... Matta is going for his 200th win as a head coach. He had 24 at Butler and 78 at Xavier and has 97 at Ohio State. ... Jamar Butler is 11 assists shy of the OSU career record of 516 by Kelvin Ransey. ... D.J. White of Indiana is averaging 11.9 rebounds in Big Ten games. The last player to average more was Iowa's Bruce King (12.9) in 1977.

IU hopes to keep rolling on the road

By Terry Hutchens
The Indianapolis Star

It has been a long time since life on the road in the Big Ten Conference has been easy for the Indiana University men's basketball team.
Since 1993 -- when IU went 8-1 on the road during a 17-1 conference title season -- the Hoosiers haven't won more than four games on the road in conference play. That could change today as No. 14 Indiana goes for a fifth conference road win at Ohio State (1 p.m., CBS-32).
Quote:
Still, all of Ohio State's conference home wins have come against second-tier opponents: Northwestern, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota and Michigan. The Buckeyes still must host Wisconsin, Purdue and Michigan State.
And Ohio State is 1-5 against Top 25 teams.
"They are really good at home, just like all of us in this league are," IU coach Kelvin Sampson said.
Maybe not all, but that's clearly the case with the top five teams. IU, Purdue, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Ohio State are a combined 64-4 at home, including 25-0 in Big Ten games. The rest of the conference is 40-32 and 7-22 in league games.

No. 14 Indiana Needs Big Game From Gordon Against Ohio State

Hoosiers seek second straight impressive road win on Sunday

Feb. 9, 2008
Indiana freshman Eric Gordon has probably already faced the most venomous road crowd of his college career, but that doesn't mean Ohio State fans will be welcoming him with open arms.
Gordon and the 14th-ranked Hoosiers seek a second straight impressive road win on Sunday when they face the Buckeyes, whose only loss in their last 39 home games came against a team that was ranked No. 1 in the country.
The Hoosiers (19-3, 8-1 Big Ten) are coming off an 83-79 double-overtime win on Thursday at Illinois, where Gordon was loudly booed and heckled because he took back a verbal commitment to attend Illinois, instead enrolling at Indiana.
Gordon, an Indianapolis product like recent Ohio State stars Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr., had only one point in the first half, shot just 3-of-13 for the game and committed seven turnovers. However, he finished with 19 points and hit a game-tying 3-pointer late in regulation to spark the Hoosiers.
"I wasn't really worried about it," Gordon said. "I was just trying to get a win. This was a big road win for us. We have to move on to the next game."
