Buckeyes to face 'Canes in Challenge



Wednesday, April 16, 2008

After losing for two consecutive years to North Carolina in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, Ohio State's men's basketball team will travel to Miami in December for the 10th edition of the conference showdown.
The Big Ten has never won the Challenge, which will be highlighted this season by North Carolina's game with Michigan State at Detroit's Ford Field.
OSU and Miami will meet for the first time since the Hurricanes knocked the Buckeyes out of the 2000 NCAA Tournament with a second-round victory.

Miami will host Ohio State in the 2008 Big Ten-ACC Challenge on Dec. 2 in Coral Gables, Fla. The game marks the first-ever Big Ten-ACC Challenge matchups between the Hurricanes and Buckeyes. The two teams last played in the second round of the 2000 NCAA tournament. Miami won, 75-62. The Buckeyes are 1-5 all-time in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge. A matchup between North Carolina and Michigan State on Dec. 3 at Detroit's Ford Field highlights next season's Big Ten-ACC Challenge schedule. Other games are Wisconsin at Virginia Tech on Dec. 1; Duke at Purdue, Clemson at Illinois, Virginia at Minnesota and Iowa at Boston College on Dec. 2; and Indiana at Wake Forest, Michigan at Maryland, Florida State at Northwestern and Penn State at Georgia Tech on Dec. 3.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Ohio State will play its seventh opponent in eight years from the Atlantic Coast Conference when it faces the University of Miami in the 2008 ACC-Big Ten Challenge. The conferences and ESPN announced the lineup of 11 games yesterday. The Buckeyes and Hurricanes will meet Dec. 2 in Coral Gables, Fla., in Miami's 7,000-seat BankUnited Center.
Miami will return four starters and its top five scorers from a team that finished 23-11 this past season, tied for fifth place in the ACC and received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Hurricanes lost to Texas in the second round.

I haven't really taken a look at the ACC, there are still guys left to commit and Indiana really doesn't have a full squad right now...But and early look...

I like Wisky, Purdue, Clemson, tOSU, Minny, BC, UNC, Wake, Maryland, FSU, Ga Tech...

So that would leave us on the short side once again...But Illinois is always tough at home and not real sure on what Clemson has, Iowa won't be a great team, but not sure on BC, MSU has a chance, but UNC will be very very good if everyone comes back, If IU could nab some players and bring everyone back they could have a chance, but Wake has a great class coming in, not sure about Maryland, but it is tough to win there, NW will be improved, but have to figure FSU will have better talent, and not sure what Ga Tech has really...

I think the Big 10 can take it this year

the only real big mismatch I see going in the ACCs favor is Wake Forest vs Indiana

the other games I could see going either way

Northwestern and Penn State may not be great, but Florida State and Georgia Tech are not spectacular either

UNC will probably beat Michigan State but Michigan State does have talent and could turn it on and upset them

I am looking forward to tomorrow when we play miami then later when we go uip against notre dame i think lauderdale will play a huge facter against nd, and if turner and lighty are consistent on d then i think there is a real good chance for a W in both games.

BREAKS THROUGH AND WINS A CHALLENGE?
In the first nine years, the ACC has won 56 of 86 games and has claimed all nine Challenges. And guess what? The trend will continue.
Quite simply, the ACC is far more loaded. And it?s certainly not helping the Big Ten that its two best teams ? No. 9 Purdue and No. 13 Michigan State ? have the monumental challenge of facing two of the country?s most dominant programs of all-time.
The Boilermakers host No. 4 Duke tonight. Michigan State, meanwhile, faces top-ranked North Carolina on Wednesday night in Ford Field. It?s unlikely that both Big Ten heavyweights prevail. One win would be considered a statement for the Big Ten.
My prediction: ACC 7, Big Ten 4
2) WHAT ABOUT DUKE? THE BLUE DEVILS HAVE NEVER
LOST IN THIS EVENT. IS THAT STREAK IN JEOPARDY?
This might be the toughest Challenge game Duke has faced yet. Since 1999, the Blue Devils have posted a perfect 9-0 record in the event. But in that span, they have played only two true road games.
In 2003, led by Chris Duhon and Shelden Williams, No. 6 Duke hammered No. 5 Michigan State 72-50 in East Lansing, Mich. Two years later, the top-ranked Blue Devils went to Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Ind., for the first time and downed No. 17 Indiana 75-67, using J.J. Redick?s 29 points to sneak away late.
Tonight?s game against Purdue should be a defensive showcase. In its 7-0 start, Duke has held opponents to an average of 60.2 points while forcing 18 turnovers per game. Purdue, led by reigning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year Chris Kramer, has been even better holding opponents to 58.2 points on 35.3 percent shooting.

We knocked a sweet drive 300 yards right onto the middle of the fairway.....now just get us on the green, and the rest of the Big Ten can 2-putt for the win. Speaking of which, there should be a trophy for the victorious, like the Ryder Cup in Golf or Slab of Bacon/Little Brown Jug/Ax in yearly college football rivalries.
