Draft-eligible Tar Heel Lawson charged with alcohol offense

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina point guard Ty Lawson was charged Friday with driving after consuming alcohol following an early-morning traffic stop.
Lawson was stopped in downtown Chapel Hill because of the loud music coming from the car, said Chapel Hill Police Capt. Jackie Carden. The car smelled of alcohol and a field sobriety test led the officer to file charges, she said.
Because Lawson is not 21, he could be charged with driving after consuming alcohol. He was also charged with violating the city's noise ordinance and driving with a suspended or revoked license, police said. He was taken into custody and later released. Lawson is scheduled to appear in court July 8.
Neither Lawson nor coach Roy Williams will comment until the legal process runs its course, a school spokesman said in a statement.
He was one of three North Carolina players who declared for the 2008 NBA Draft. Lawson has not hired an agent, meaning he could return to school for his junior season.

AKRON, Ohio -- Akron dismissed Rydell Brooks, who was accused of shooting at police officers during a foot chase after a traffic stop.
Brooks was dismissed from school on Friday. He was indicted on charges of attempted aggravated murder and felonious assault on May 18.
Brooks' attorney Michael Bowler said if his client is acquitted, he could be reinstated.
Brooks transferred to Akron last June from Niagara University. He was a walk-on, non-scholarship player and sat out last season.

Interesting to see if this will affect Lawson's draft position. I think right now he is probably in the top 20 and I wonder if he drops.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - Markieff Morris, an incoming freshman basketball player at Kansas, is facing a battery charge after allegedly firing a BB gun from his dorm window.

The 18-year-old, a member of coach Bill Self's 2008 recruiting class along with his twin brother, Marcus, has been ordered to appear Sept. 10 in Lawrence Municipal Court, the Lawrence Journal-World reported Wednesday on its Web site.

Campus police said shots were fired about 11:15 p.m. Saturday from a room in the Jayhawker Towers. A 47-year-old Wisconsin woman was in the dorm's courtyard about the same time and reported being shot in the arm with a plastic BB. The woman suffered minor injuries, according to the newspaper.
Morris is also suspected of using alcohol during the incident. Officers seized a 3-foot-long black Airsoft rifle and a medium-sized plastic bag of BBs.

Markieff and Marcus Morris, forwards from Philadelphia, played last season at a prep school in Pennsauken, N.J. As of Wednesday night, they were still awaiting an academic eligibility determination that would let them play for the Jayhawks.

Wow, battery charges for shooting someone with an airsoft gun. Wonder if minor injuries are a burning sensation for less than 5 seconds. Why not shoot college students rather than 47 year old women who will call the cops though....

When Lighty had the BB incident when he was still in high school was the firing this same type of BB's or were they different? I guess one thing about David's situation was that at least he was not drinking thank goodness.

Bulls' Robinson suspended 3 games

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -- Leading scorer Andy Robinson was suspended for three games by the University at Buffalo on Friday for posting an advertisement on the Internet last spring to pay someone to write a course paper.
Buffalo coach Reggie Witherspoon said the suspension will cover the Bulls' first three regular-season games. Robinson, a senior guard who topped Buffalo in scoring last season, has resumed practicing with the team after being suspended in April.
"He has done everything asked of him from the university, division of athletics and men's basketball program to atone for his actions, and has learned and grown from his mistake," Witherspoon said in a statement.
The suspension was handed down after Robinson acknowledged he placed an ad on the Facebook.com marketplace Web site, offering to pay $40 or more for someone to write a course paper. News of the advertisement was first published in the school's student newspaper, The Spectrum, which led to Robinson's suspension.
Robinson has since completed the paper on his own and apologized, saying, "I take full responsibility and realize I must regain the trust of my teammates, fellow student athletes and coaching staff."

STORRS, Conn. -- Connecticut freshman basketball player Nate Miles told a newspaper Thursday night that he doesn't know if he will appeal being expelled from school after being arrested for violating a restraining order.
Miles made his comments by telephone to the Connecticut Post.
The Hartford Courant reported that Miles' guardian, Sean Patterson, said the 6-foot-7 forward was expelled following an administrative hearing Thursday.
"In my mind, he was railroaded today," said Patterson, a former youth coach who became Miles' legal guardian.
A university spokesman refused comment, citing student confidentiality rules.
According to court documents, the 20-year-old Miles was served with a restraining order on Sept. 22, after a woman claimed he had attempted to force her into having sex. He is accused of violating the order by placing a phone call to the woman less than 20 minutes after receiving it.
On Tuesday, Miles was in court, where the case was continued to Nov. 25 and he was referred for counseling, which could lead a judge to dismiss the charges.

RENO, Nev. (AP) - Nevada starting guard Brandon Fields and two incoming freshmen have been suspended from the basketball team indefinitely after being cited for misdemeanor petty larceny, Wolf Pack coach Mark Fox said Thursday.
London Giles, a 6-foot-3 guard from Dallas, and Ahyaro Phillips, a 6-8 forward from New Orleans, were suspended along with Fields after their release by Sparks police following an undisclosed incident on Wednesday, Fox said in a statement.
"I am extremely disappointed to learn of this situation," Fox said. "I do not know all of the facts right now and will not have any further comment until I have a better understanding of the situation."
Rhonda Lundin, Nevada's assistant athletic director for media services, said it's not known how long the suspensions will last but that they will continue until police complete an investigation of the case.
"They are suspended from the team. They are suspended until we have all the facts," Lundin told The Associated Press. She said it was not clear what the suspension would entail or whether the three would be allowed to practice with the team. Violations of the school's code of conduct can result in anything from lost practice time to dismissal, she said.

Gophers basketball recruit Trevor Mbakwe accused of assaulting Miami woman, but says 'it's not true'

Former St. Bernard's basketball standout Trevor Mbakwe, a key member of University of Minnesota coach Tubby Smith's incoming recruiting class, is facing a felony battery charge stemming from an April incident in Miami-Dade County.
"Some stuff went on; it's not true," Mbakwe said Tuesday night. "It will come out. That's why I'm just really not worried about it right now. I'm just focusing on school. There's nothing really much to it. It's just something you have to go through."
Mbakwe's attorney, Gregory Samms, wrote in an e-mail that this was "a case of mistaken identity."
According to a police report, a woman said there was a party at her Miami apartment complex for the Miami Dade College basketball team, Mbakwe's junior college team. She was walking from her vehicle to her apartment shortly before 3 a.m. April 3, according to the police report, when a man allegedly rode up on a bicycle and asked her if she was "(expletive) up." "She ignored him, frightened and began to walk faster," the police report said. "The def(endant) rode beside her and asked if she was OK. She answered, 'Yes.' Then, the def(endant) dropped the bike and approached the victim. The def(endant) attempted to pull her pants down. The victim began to yell for help, and then the def(endant) punched her in the face, knocking her down.
"The victim got up and attempted to run away, when the def(endant) punched her again in the face," the report said. "The def(endant) got back on his bike. The victim called 911."
The woman was hospitalized, according to the police report, and suffered a fractured cheekbone and ruptured sinus. The woman identified Mbakwe, 20, from a photograph by searching online for the Miami Dade basketball team, according to the police report.
"Several attempts were made to locate the def(endant) with negative results," the police report said. "Further investigation revealed the def(endant) departed the state and returned to his mother's home in Minnesota." After retaining an attorney, the report said, Mbakwe flew back to Miami to surrender. The St. Paul native was arrested April 28, the report said, but made no statements while invoking his rights.
