Recruiting class grows up with 6-foot-4 Serb

The Ohio State women's basketball team added some size to its 2009-10 recruiting class yesterday by signing Aleksandra Dobranic to a national letter of intent.


Dobranic is a 6-foot-4 forward-center from Novi Sad, Serbia. She will join the incoming freshman class that includes forward Emilee Harmon and guards Brianna Sanders and Tayler Hill.

"We were contacted by someone over there," coach Jim Foster said. "We watched some DVDs and she came here for a visit. We just liked her size and her touch. It's always good to have another big kid in the gym, and Serbia has a history of turning out some good players."

A member of the Serbian Junior National Team, Dobranic, 18, played in the Balkan Championships in Romania and in the European Championships in Slovakia in 2008.

Apparently she wasn't a starter.

I was pleased to hear that Foster picked up a post player for next year's class. Now she will 2 years to play under Lavender. Hopefully, she gets up the court quickly so that she can fit into Foster's up-tempo style with Sammy

I guess we won't be looking at Dunning who left LSU this spring or the Ohio player of 2009 who recently was released from her letter of intent at USC. Both of these players go about 6'2" and would probably fit into the PF position where we have quite a few recruits coming in this and next year.

Let's not get carried away. Two of the top 10 players in the 2010 class are from Ohio including the number two ranked player who has already said that she will be going to Duke. I am going to have to check down Hamilton Road and make sure Kathleen Sawyer has left town

Everyone complained when he let Dunning get away...They didn't push hard for her...

He has now landed some real big time recruits over the past couple years...

Jackson, Johnson, Lavendar, Prahalis, Stokes, Harmon, Hill, Ellerbee, Moore, Serb, 2011 pg, and there is another girl in 2011 that is very good teammate of hers that we are said to be leading for...

Womens basketball is a totally different animal than mens sports...It is slowly changing but still the Dooks, Carolinas, tennessees, uconns rule the sport...If they offer OOS girls they always get a long hard look. It makes sense that we should land all big time in-state players in football/ mens basketball but with girls basketball that doesn't happen like that, and Foster has been able to make up for that with some big time OOS stars he has brought in...

he has also passed on some girls instate that they didn't like much...That others thought they should go after...Like Dunning and the girl that went to FSU last year...big 6'4'' girl...

The multi-sport standout at Salem High was expected to make volleyball her college career.
Arguably the best volleyball player in the history of the Mahoning Valley finally made her college decision.
But not in the sport everyone expected.
Salem High?s Amy Scullion has verbally committed to play basketball at Ohio State.
?It definitely was a really hard decision,? said Scullion, a first team All-Ohioan in volleyball and a third team all-state selection in basketball. ?It came down to Ohio State being the school I wanted to be at.
?I love the atmosphere and I love the university. I jumped at the chance.?
Scullion follows in the footsteps of her older sister Katie, who was a freshman at Ohio State this school year, and her parents, who both graduated from OSU?s optometry school.
When asked how much of a factor her sister played in the decision, Scullion smiled and said, ?I think it was a bigger factor than I would like to admit. We?re pretty close and it?s definitely going to be nice to be down there with her again.?
Scullion (6-foot) can play either forward or guard on the basketball team and is an outside hitter on the volleyball team.

Interesting pick-up. Third team all state has to be considered a bit of a stretch given the pedigree of other players on the roster and other in state girls we have not offered..

There is only a month of overlap between the two sports. I wonder if this was some sort of joint decision/arrangement.

Sort of thought the same thing especially looking at her stats last season and basketball plus her high school is only Division II. Reading the article beach volleyball becomes a NCAA sport in her first year and she might be looking at that also. Anyway she is from the Valley and since I am married to a Valley girl she must be good

When Amy Scullion was a freshman ? and when Salem High girls basketball coach Jeff Andres was still being surprised by things Scullion could do ? he was running a practice when a basketball got stuck between the rim and the backboard.

?With guys, they just jump up and tip it out, but with girls, they head over to the ball rack and hit it down,? Andres said. ?Next thing I know, she goes flying through the air and hits it out.

?I think that?s when my eyes opened the widest.?

When Scullion plays, it?s best to keep them open. An All-Ohioan in both basketball and volleyball, she has spent the last three years dominating area competition, due to a rare combination of athleticism, tenacity and work ethic.

The junior standout has already verbally committed to play basketball at Ohio State ? and that?s her second-best sport.

?She?s a coach?s dream, both attitude-wise and athleticism-wise? said her Junior Olympic volleyball coach Curt Conser, whose father, Don, coaches Salem?s varsity volleyball team. ?She knows she?s better than almost everyone in the gym, but you would never get that from her.?

Scullion started playing basketball soon after she learned how to walk ? her father played college basketball at Mount Union ? and after a six-year flirtation with swimming, she turned to volleyball in the seventh grade, mainly because her older sister, Katie, was playing.

?Whatever my sister did, I did the same,? Scullion said.

Scullion?s parents approached Conser for private lessons at the local community center and he was immediately struck by Scullion?s athleticism and coordination.

?She had never really touched a volleyball before, but she was just so coachable,? said Conser, the head volleyball coach at Geneva College the past 12 years. ?You?d show her how to do something and she could almost immediately perform the skill.?

The 5-foot-11 Scullion made a smooth transition to high school, starting varsity in both sports and earning first team all-conference honors in each and honorable mention All-Ohio in volleyball. (She was a first teamer in that sport the past two years.)

?Her freshman year, she broke her hand down the stretch and didn?t play the last three or four games,? Andres said. ?But she still came to every practice, even though it was likely she wasn?t going to play. She was still out there doing our defensive slides, doing the sprints.

?That?s the type of kid she is. She was cheering her teammates on. She wanted to be out there.?
