For just a moment in the second half yesterday in Nationwide Arena, the ghost of NCAA Tournaments past rattled its chains nearly loud enough to be heard above the din of the 5,249 mostly Ohio State fans nervously exhorting the women's basketball team to put away a pugnacious underdog.

The Buckeyes, the third seed in the Berkeley Regional, were locked in a struggle against 14th-seeded Sacred Heart in a first-round game that threatened to resemble opening upset losses to Marist and Florida State in the past two tournaments.

The moment passed because Samantha Prahalis apparently isn't afraid to whistle in the dark or thread a 40-foot pass in traffic that Jantel Lavender can catch and lay in the basket in one stride.

Prahalis put together a game for the ages while helping the Buckeyes run to a 77-63 victory over the Pioneers. The freshman point guard scored 23 points, had seven assists against one turnover and generally was in the middle of everything bad that happened to Sacred Heart.

"I think she was awesome," said Lavender, who posted a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds. "She showed how she could get past people and she showed her talent, because that's her game. It was really effective today."

It was a bad shot, and on another day, it might have been the last one Maria Moeller took.

The Ohio State junior guard has had moments of doubt and crises in confidence in the past two years, as her role changed and playing time diminished.

So when Moeller air-balled a long jumper from deep in the corner yesterday in an NCAA Tournament first-round game at Nationwide Arena, few would have been surprised if she shut it down after that.
"A H-O-R-S-E shot," coach Jim Foster called it.

To make matters worse, she committed a foul shortly afterward, and Sacred Heart scored on the possession to cut Ohio State's once-comfortable lead to 46-44.

But this game was different. Moeller made three second-half three-pointers and ended with a career-high 12 points in OSU's 77-63 victory.
She was 4 of 6 on three-pointers in 21 minutes.

This was a breakout game, considering she came in with 17 field goals in 433 minutes this season -- or one basket every 25 minutes.

I could not be more pleased to see Tennessee go out in the first round. That makes me so happy. Notre Dame going out in the first-round makes me second happy

But...but...the ESPN commentator said they were her sleeper pick! That was so gutsy picking last year's national champion and perennial powerhouse as her sleeper!

OSU up 33-31 at the half. Sara Schulze got a follow-up basket with less than 1 second on the clock to give OSU the 2 point lead. Allen and Lavender both have 2 fouls and Prahalis has 0 points and 1 assist (I think). OSU is giving up quite a few offensive rebounds and is turning the ball over too often trying to force the ball inside when MSU is collapsing immediately. They may have to win this game from the outside-in if MSU is going to continue to deny the entry passes as fervently. Trebilcock and Johnson are going to need to knock down some shots to open up the paint.

Lavender has 10 points and 4 rebounds.

Tysheka Grimes of MSU has 18 in the first half after averaging 8 for the season.

OSU is doing a nice job of breaking the 3 person full court press, but isn't turning the resulting 3-on-2 into easy buckets.

OSU opens the 2nd with 4 straight to make it 37-31, including 2 free throws by Lavender when MSU's center picked up her third personal foul.

Prahalis just threw a cross court baseball pass about 50 feet on a line. Her ability to put passes in the right place for the recipient is remarkable.

MSU 55, OSU 54, MSU ball with 6:53 left. OSU is shooting a much better percentage, but MSU is doing a number on the offensive boards and OSU is turning the ball over far more often. Reminds me a bit of another team I've watched a lot of.
