BERKELEY, Calif. -- When 5:39 remained in Ohio State's NCAA regional semifinal game Saturday night, the Buckeyes proved what they had accomplished this year.

In a run sparked by freshman point guard Samantha Prahalis and sustained by several bench players, OSU had appeared to survive foul trouble to star center Jantel Lavender, fighting back to slice an 11-point Stanford lead to four.

The Buckeyes had shown increased versatility, depth, heart and hustle -- several areas in which the program improved this season.

But three minutes later, OSU also showed what steps it still has to take. The Cardinal relentlessly attacked the vulnerable Lavender inside, throwing not one, not two, but three athletic post players at the Buckeyes.

The result was an 8-2 run and a 10-point lead that Stanford stretched out to an 84-66 victory.

OSU's loss certainly was nothing to be ashamed of, coming to the higher-seeded team (Stanford was No. 2, OSU No. 3) and played just an hour from the Cardinal's campus.

"That team played in the national championship last year and stands a good chance of being a Final Four team this year," OSU coach Jim Foster said.

But it did point up the difference in the two programs. Stanford's five starters all were 6 feet or taller, and they could all run.

Ohio State (29-6) won its fifth straight Big Ten title this season, but more important, it made major strides in breaking out from its shell of being a Midwestern power that made a habit of losing early in the NCAAs. It made its first Sweet 16 appearance in four years and second in seven years.

I really think they need to bring in another wing player who can shoot from the perimeter on a consistent basis. Foster also needs to start looking for a center to replace Lavender who will be a junior next season or the cupboard will be bare unless he wants to start a freshman when Lavender graduates.

This team made a lot of improvement this year but their wing players really need to get better with their outside shooting or teams will continue to double-team Lavender or play a zone defense and just dare Ohio State to beat them with their outside shooting. It was good enough for the Big 10 but in watching a couple games over the weekend it certainly is not good enough for the NCAA.

Typo I meant Oklahoma or Stanford certainly not Rutgers Saying that, Purdue certainly did not look like the team that Ohio State beat in Big 10 play.

Tayler Hill, the record-breaking basketball guard from Minneapolis South, said Tuesday there still is no front-runner for her choice of college but that she hopes to decide in a week.

"I've gone back and forth," Hill said. "It's tough to decide. There are pros and cons."

Her final three are the Gophers, Ohio State and Texas. She said Minnesota has as good a chance as the others.

Ohio State, Hill said, initially became a contender because her brother, P.J., was a junior starter for the Buckeyes this season.

"But then it went beyond that," she said.

Hill has eliminated Duke and Marquette from her final choices.

Minneapolis South senior guard Tayler Hill is finally at peace.

It took nearly five years.

Hill, one of the nation's top girls basketball recruits, has made her college choice but won't divulge it until today, during a news conference in the school's gymnasium where she became a high school legend the past five years.

She has chosen a unique way to reveal her choice. Placed somewhere in the stands will be nine students hiding letters. When it comes time, Hill will cue her buddies, who will stand and flip their letters.

Spelled out will be "Longhorns" (Texas' nickname), "Minnesota" or "Ohio State."

"Keeping it in is one of the hardest things I've ever had to do,'' Hill said Wednesday while fidgeting with a large ring she received for being a McDonald's All-American. "There are times when I've wanted to (bust) out and tell someone, anyone. But telling everyone at once is the right thing for me.''

Hill, the nation's No. 12-ranked recruit and second-best shooting guard, has Ohio State, the University of Texas and the University of Minnesota as her finalists. Hill, regarded as perhaps Minnesota's best girls player ever, gives no clue to which school will receive good news today.

She appeared to drop a hint when she said, "I really don't like huge campuses, but if it is contained in a small area, I can get along with that pretty well.''

Ohio State has the largest enrollment of any college or university in the country, with 53,715 students. Minnesota is No. 4 at 51,141, and Texas is ranked sixth with 50,006.

Making her college announcement in her high school gymnasium with 9 friends who are from the same high school in Minnesota does that give me a fuzzy feeling about her selection.

If she dropped a hint with the "if it is contained in a small area" comment then which of the two ( tOSU or MN ) is contained in the smallest area? I've never been to MN's campus, so I don't know how they compare - area-usage-wise. All 3 finalists are HUGE ENROLLMENT colleges so that doesn't help narrow anything in and of itself!

Seems like some tOSU insiders feel we are in good shape here, guess we'll find out soon!

Tayler Hill, the Minneapolis South girls' basketball star who rewrote the Minnesota record book, played in four state tournaments and finished her storied high school career with a state championship, will end one of the longest recruiting sagas in state history today by announcing that she will play college basketball at Ohio State.

A news conference is scheduled to begin in the South High School gymnasium at 2 p.m.

Family played a role in Hill's decision. Her brother P.J. Hill, a graduate of Minneapolis North, recently completed his junior season on the Buckeyes men's basketball team. But the choice was not easy. The other schools on her final list were Minnesota, Duke, Marquette and Texas.
