Zisis Sarikopoulos, who played only nine minutes in Greece's first three games, ostensibly because of a left knee injury, did not play in his team's 85-69 loss to the United States today in the FIBA under-19 world championships in New Zealand.

An Ohio State spokesman said the basketball team's athletic trainer, Vince O'Brien, has no information on the injury.

Sarikopoulos' injury a knee sprain

Greece continues to hold Zisis Sarikopoulos out of the FIBA under-19 world championships because of a left knee sprain, an Ohio State spokesman said today after assistant coach Alan Major returned from Auckland, New Zealand, where the tournament is being played.

Sarikopoulos will be re-evaluated after the team returns to Greece this weekend. He is still hopeful of playing for his country in the under-20 European championships later this month.

Sarikopoulos sidelined again
Zisis Sarikopoulos, limited by a left knee sprain in the under-19 world championship last week in New Zealand, is faring no better in the European under-20 championship in his homeland of Greece.

The 7-foot sophomore had three points and one rebound in Greece's opening win over Belgium but was seen icing an ankle after the game. He has not played since in a win over Italy and a loss to France.

Sarikopoulos helps Greece win gold
Sidelined early in the tournament by an injured ankle, Zisis Sarikopoulos returned for the final five games and had 14 points and 13 rebounds off the bench to help Greece capture the gold medal in the European under-20 championships.

Sarikopoulos played 15 minutes in an 87-76 semifinal win over Spain on Saturday and 12 minutes in the 90-85 win over France in the title game today.

Lauderdale?s absence should give 7-foot sophomore center Zisis Sarikopoulos more playing time. He sat out last season after transferring to Ohio State from Alabama-Birmingham.

Guard David Lighty says Sarikopoulos reminds him of former NBA center Vlade Divac.

?In the post, he?s a real wide body,? Lighty said. ?He can get people open with screens. He has hit me with a couple of them. He can offensive rebound. He is hard to move. And he makes good decisions with the ball. If you cut and move around, he can find the open man.?

Sarikopoulos played for his native Greece in this summer?s U19 World Championships. Greece lost to the United States in the gold medal game.

Sarikopoulos transferred from Alabama-Birmingham after realizing that the basketball in Conference USA was more run-and-gun than he liked. He wanted a more physical game like the Big Ten would provide, though the Buckeyes are hoping to run more this season. Madsen, transferring from Vanderbilt, was hoping for playing time and hasn't found much, though he's encountered great practice experience.

"I might not have had the amount of playing time I hoped for, but I'm not going to play many better players that the guys here the last few years," Madsen said. "So I'm not really scared of anybody. I'm not scared of failing. I'm not scared of some guy who is supposed to be better than me. I've guarded Greg Oden."

"That?s pretty much my favorite move in practice. Unfortunately, it hasn?t been working in practice lately because everybody knows what I?m doing.

"When I made the first one today, I felt more confident. That?s why I went back to (it) and I made the second one, too. Coach (Alan) Major has been working with us a lot and my shooting has improved a lot around the basket."

The 7-foot, 265-pounder from Athens, Greece, is eligible after sitting out last season following his transfer from Alabama-Birmingham. He is expected to open the season as the Buckeyes' starting center while Dallas Lauderdale recovers from a broken bone in his right hand. Sarikopoulos started four games and played in 20 as a freshman at UAB two years ago and averaged 1.8 points and 1.1 rebounds. He has extensive international experience playing for age-group Greek national teams. A knee injury kept him out of most games this past summer, but in 2008 he averaged 10.3 points and 9.4 rebounds and blocked 18 shots to help Greece win the gold medal in the under-18 European championships.
