2009-2010 Men's Basketball
Although the dates are not finalized, it looks like the next season will open at VCA with James Madison, and the early games will include two games at MSG in NYC, all as part of the 2K Sports Classic to benefit Coaches vs. Cancer.

Ohio State will open the 2009-2010 men's basketball season by playing host to first- and second-round games in the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer, according to the Daily News-Record of Harrisonburg, Va.

The newspaper reported that James Madison, located in Harrisonburg, is likely to play the Buckeyes in the season opener in Value City Arena.
Regardless of whether Ohio State wins or loses the first two games, it will play two more games in the tournament the following week in Madison Square Garden in New York.

tOSU will be joining North Carolina, Syracuse, and Cal at MSG in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at the atart of next season.

Tickets are available for the games in NY in November, 2009.

Ohio State will be joined by North Carolina, Syracuse and California next season for the final two rounds of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in New York's Madison Square Garden. The games will be played Nov. 19 and 20.

The four schools will play host to four-team regionals Nov. 9-13 but regardless of the outcomes will advance to New York. James Madison is expected to play Ohio State in the Buckeyes' season opener in Value City Arena.

I was just talking to a colleague about how playing time might shake out next season if the Buckeyes don?t add anyone or lose anyone else beyond B.J. Mullens, which would leave 11 scholarship players on the roster.

What shook out in our conversation was a rotation with three options at every position. The key is if Evan Turner can handle the point. If he can, here?s what I see, with starters listed first:

Point guard: Evan Turner, P.J. Hill, Jeremie Simmons.
Wing guard: Jon Diebler, Jeremie Simmons, Walter Offutt.
Wing forward: William Buford, David Lighty, Evan Turner.
Power forward: David Lighty, Nikola Kecman, Kyle Madsen.
Center: Dallas Lauderdale, Zisis Sarikopoulos, Kyle Madsen.

Personally, I would love to see that rotation. I wouldn't even mind to see Diebler bring the ball up periodically. Hill and Simmons could split the minutes with those two guys at the #1 and #2 positions. It would pretty pretty easy to distribute the minutes in addition to giving Buford and Lighty 30-35 minutes per game. A zone defense was the length of those four wings would be very very nice if they did not play man-to-man next year and I do not think that they will.

I think Diebler might be able to play some point, but only if he works really, really hard on improving his handle.

Inside the Sprint Center locker room in Kansas City two weeks ago, with the Michigan basketball season just ended, U-M stars Manny Harris and DeShawn Sims said they would return next season.

Sims laughed at the notion that he might leave and Harris said he hadn't even thought about it, but told Free Press columnist Michael Rosenberg two weeks earlier that he would not inquire about his draft status.

"No, I think I'm coming back," he said.

That was then ...

Michigan coach John Beilein, interviewed Thursday on WTKA (1050-AM), was asked directly if Harris and Sims are coming back next year, bypassing interest in the NBA.

Beilein's answer was not definitive.

"There's a certain protocol you have to go through to end up doing that," Beilein said. "I can't answer that question just yet. I think it would be premature to answer that question. There are certain things we have to do to understand what happens with this whole thing. So we'll probably be able to give you more news on that in the weeks ahead. That doesn't mean people should start worrying out there, it just means I'm not going to talk about it."

When I was watching the b-ball game last night on the ESPN bottom line it said that Kevin Grady was leaving. No mention of the two guys reference in this article.

The writing was on the wall when David Merritt kept getting playing time over Grady. For whatever reason, Beilein would rather have gargled windex than play him, so he made the obvious move.

Effects for next year:
  • Darius Morris has virtually no competition for the starting point guard slot.
  • Uh? and there's no backup point guard with the walk-ons graduating. Stu Douglass? Laval Lucas-Perry?
  • Michigan now has a third scholarship for the 2010 class. The class could grow to five if Anthony Wright isn't offered a fifth year?which was a near-certainty until the first half of the Oklahoma game?and Manny Harris leaves after his junior season.
Given Michigan's need for a big, Manny-Deshawn-replacing 2010 class this is probably a net benefit for the team long term. In the short term, Grady's absence puts the onus squarely on Morris.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) ? Jake Kelly has been released from the Iowa men's basketball team, his father says.

Terre Haute resident Bob Kelly told the Tribune-Star on Thursday that the sophomore had asked to be released so he could be closer to home following the death of his mother.

Bob Kelly says his son is interested in playing at Indiana State but had not been in contact with the coach.

Jake Kelly was the Hawkeyes' leading scorer this past season at 11.6 points per game. He also averaged 3.1 assists while starting 24 of Iowa's 32 games.

Julia Kelly died in a plane crash in Florida in June 2008. Jake Kelly had attended high school in Marshall, Ill., and Carmel, Ind., while living with her following his parents' divorce.

Kelly was thrust into the starting lineup last season when freshman Anthony Tucker was injured. He was decent for much of the year,
sprinkling in a few stellar outings with a bunch of average ones. But when point guard Jeff Peterson went out with a hamstring injury, coach Todd Lickliter put the ball in Kelly's hands and Kelly turned into one of the best players in the Big Ten.

In the final three weeks of the season, Kelly won the league's player of the week honor twice and scored at least 19 points in six straight games.
The announcement comes just a day after junior Jermain Davis announced that he will leave the program to transfer to Minnesota State, a Division II school in Mankato, Minn.

Davis averaged 4.5 points and 3 rebounds in 30 games for Iowa last season.

After playing North Carolina twice in a row in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in 2006 and 2007, the matchups for Ohio State have become slightly less glamorous.

Last year, Ohio State won at Miami, a victory over a ranked team that did help the Buckeyes' NCAA Tournament resume.

Next season, the Buckeyes will host Florida State on Wednesday, Dec. 2.

Ohio State might have a chance to play North Carolina to start the season in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in New York.

Last year, Florida State finished fourth in the ACC, while the Buckeyes finished in a three-way tie for fourth with Penn State and Wisconsin.

Michigan State and North Carolina will meet for the third time in two seasons after playing in the Challenge last year and then meeting for the national title.

As you probably know, the Big Ten has never won this showdown, losing 10 years in a row. Last season, the ACC won 6-5.

I think the Big Ten has a great shot at winning the challenge for the first time next year looking at the matchups.
Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State and Purdue should win their games. Iowa and Indiana are at home with winnable games and I think Illinois or Minnesota can steal a game on the road, maybe Penn State too if Taylor Battle goes off. I don't like Wisconsin's matchup, but they are at home so you never know.
