The Associated Press: Report: Memphis to vacate Final Four season

MEMPHIS, Tenn. ? Memphis will be forced to vacate the record 38 victories from its Final Four season of 2007-08, according to a report by the Memphis Commercial Appeal.

The newspaper, citing a source close to the situation, said on its Web site Wednesday night that the NCAA will release findings of its investigation into violations committed by the program Thursday.

The NCAA investigated whether someone took the SAT exam for a player on that team. Memphis was notified of potential violations in January and met with the NCAA in June.

Memphis finished 38-2 in 2007-08, setting the NCAA record for wins in a season. The Tigers lost 75-68 to Kansas in overtime in the national championship game.

It would be the second time both Memphis and former coach John Calipari had to vacate Final Four seasons. The Tigers were stripped of their 1985 appearance and Calipari's Massachusetts team lost its 1996 berth.

Memphis athletic director R.C. Johnson, coach Josh Pastner and a spokesman for the team couldn't be reached for comment Wednesday night.

The Commercial Appeal's source was unaware of any penalties beyond this season.

Something doesn't seem fair about this. Calipari will still be considered a great coach and Rose is a budding superstar in the NBA.

What really bothers me here is that Johnny C. has been the head basketball coach at 2 Division I schools and both have been dealt with major infractions which were caused when he was still the HC at those two schools. I don't understand the big difference between what he has done and what Sampson did at Indiana following his fiasco at Oklahoma. The only big difference that I see is that Sampson got caught while he was still at OU while Johnny left UMass and Memphis before the NCAA caught on to what was going on. I would think even though he is the HC at an entirely different school that either he or the University of Kentucky should pay some type of penalty to the NCAA if they still want him to be their head coach. The penalty could be a monetary one and the NCAA could set up a academic scholarship fund.

Sampson was directly involved in the infractions at OU and IU. To my knowledge, there was no evidence Calipari was involved in the infractions at UMass or Memphis.

I see your point but he is supposed to have complete control over his basketball program and he did hire his assistant coaches
