They played Man to Man defense the entire game, unless they did something sneaky when my eyes were on the baseball game.

And only one turnover. Pretty good line. Not sure I've seen a Buckeye game where the "point guard" led the team with 14 rebounds.

Best line of the evening was Mark Titus. Got the trillion.

According to those stats, Dallas played zero minutes and had 1 block - maybe with his long arms he got one from the bench.

Walsh was a terrible team, so it is hard to get a read...

But Turner was killing it out there...

I thought Z looked pretty good. He isn't a stiff, seems ok to throw his body around a little bit...

I still think we will struggle rebounding, but I expect this team to force a ton of turnovers with the length and quickness to defend...

Good shooting team as well...

We kinda know what to expect from the team, other than Z, don't think Kecman will see much time...Needs to find his role on the team and try and find a way to fit in...

I was never really a fan of the Turner to PG, but it looked solid tonight, but will be something to watch as we start playing better competition.

Not sure if anyone was at the game, but Lighty's shot was falling tonight, but I swear everytime he shoots the ball I think it is going to come up a foot short of the rim and go in...Just an odd shot off his hand...

B-20's Annual Exhibition Game Observations

Probably the best all-around Buckeye team I've seen play an exhibition game in a while. They still have a lot to work on, but the pieces are there... minus maybe a rock down low (they really miss Dallas). This team looks like a physical 4-guard, shoot-the-lights-out type of team that is going to contest every basket you take. That said, I can see us having trouble against a team that has talent and depth at the 4 and 5 (ala a Georgetown) because this team still seems to have a glaring weakness that carried over from last year: rebounding. If they can go after rebounds like they contest and block shots, they could go from a good team to a very good team.

Having so many players able to bring the ball down the court (Turner, Simmons, Hill, Offut, Lighty) is a real blessing, especially when the other team will be pressing us. Haven't had that type of ability since we had Mike Conley, Jamar Butler, and Ron Lewis in '06.

Evan Turner - Looks like he's poised and ready for the season already. Really went hard after the rebounds tonight and really had his timing down pat to sky and come down with that ball. With all the options we have available on offense this year and Lighty back, it'll be interesting to see if teams still double and triple team him this year. Looked quite a bit more comfortable with the ball in his hands tonight than in times in the past. Strong on defense, but honestly was expecting a little bit more tonight.

David Lighty - Man it was great seeing him back on the floor tonight! Still looks to be the heart and soul of this team and does a little bit of everything. Showcased a little offense tonight and at times looked hard to tell apart from Evan. Evan and D-Light play so well off each other. Once those two get into sync more on D, we will be a hard team to score against.

Jon Diebler - Looks a lot more confident, especially on D. There is no 2nd guessing with him. Had quite a few sweet, timely shots tonight that really seem to be his calling card. Had one bad TO that ended in a fast break dunk that I can remember.

William Buford - No one scores more quietly than Will does. Before you knew it, he had 15 points. With teams gameplanning against Turner and Lighty, Will and his deadly-accurate silky smooth shot helps us go from "just making it by" to "pulling away". Not afraid to pull up and shoot from anywhere. If he can improve his defense and rebounding, he's gonna be a great one at the next level.

Kyle Madsen - Started down low in place of Dallas, but he's really no where near starter material. Love his hustle though. One of those guys you say "no, no, no!" when he shoots the pull-up jumper, then end up saying "yay!" when he hits it. Fouled out with a little over 8 min to play in the 2nd half, which was MUCH too soon.

Dallas Lauderdale - Still sporting the beard. Looking forward to him getting back on the court and shaking off the cobwebs. We really need him this year.

Jeremie Simmons - Had a really solid game off the bench tonight! You know you're deep when Jeremie is sitting on the bench in a 4-guard line-up. 10 pts, 4 dimes in limited minutes. Handled the ball well, got the ball to the open man, and took some great shots. Love seeing him drive to the basket and want to see him do it more often.

PJ Hill - PJ is that guy you hate to play against. Always moving on offense, playing like his hair is on fire on defense. Guarded their best player when Turner and Lighty left the floorIn a fairly silent Schott tonight, you could really hear PJ talk on D, commnicating with his teammates. Took an elbow to the face in the 2nd half because of that gnat-like brand of D he plays. Our spark plug.

Zisis Sarikopoulos - 1st time getting to see him play. Reminds me a little bit of a really raw Bill Robinson. Not nimble by any stretch of the imagination, but solid and looked serviceable, despite being painfully raw. Looks like he's still getting a hang of things on defense, but came up with some slick looking blocks and rebounds when we needed them. Had a nice little finger-roll that I'm hoping he has a patent on. Still has a lot to learn, but when he gets a hang of things and gets a little faster at recognizing and reacting, he could be a serious steal.

Walter Offut - Would love to see him get some more minutes. Kid can straight jump out of the gym and looks like he has some nice handles. Unselfish, but almost seems invisible out there sometimes. Really like the energy he brings out there.

Nikola Kecman - In my opinion, he's going to be our sleeper this year. During 2nd half shootaround, he hit 6-8 long 2's and 3's in a row without batting an eyelash. Like the idea of him stretching the court and being able to hit the long pull-up when we need a shot. Played well in the 2nd half with the hustle players.

We have a crazy schedule this year with a lot of really good teams, so we're gonna need all the depth we can get. I love how much experience, talent, and athleticisim we have this year coming back and I hope we have enough good luck to help compliament those traits.

North Carolina in 3 games!

Ohio State 86, Walsh 48: Turner lights fire under Buckeyes
Thursday, November 5, 2009
By Bob Baptist
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

We saw what happened last season when coach Thad Matta gave Evan Turner the ball at the end of games and told him to get his.

What happened last night when Matta gave Turner the ball from the start of the game?

He got some for himself and everyone else.

Reveling in his new role of leading an up-tempo offense, Turner had 15 points, 14 rebounds, six assists and only one turnover, and the Ohio State men's basketball team defeated Walsh University 86-48 in an exhibition game in Value City Arena.

"I just looked up and made sure I didn't throw it to the other team," said Turner, who had a number of long advance passes to teammates for layups after grabbing defensive rebounds himself. "You all know in past years that was 50-50. I'm just trying to make sure my teammate gets it (this year) and gets an easy run-out."

Buckeyes Run over Walsh 86-48 in Exhibition Game
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Two years ago the Ohio State men?s basketball team lost its final exhibition game 70-68 to Findlay just prior to the start of the 2007-08 season.

It proved to be an omen of things to come, as the Buckeyes would miss the NCAA Tournament for just the second time under Head Coach Thad Matta (they were ineligible for post-season play during Matta?s first season in Columbus).

Evan Turner and Jon Diebler were only freshmen on that team (to make it clear how long ago that was, Eric Wallace outscored Turner that night), but they remember what it was like in the locker room after the game.

?I remember coach went nuts. He got so mad I think he fell in the locker room because he tried to kick a chair. He kicked the chair and hit the ground,? said Turner, who is now in his third season in Columbus.

Obviously not a very good opponent. I was very pleased with how much OSU ran and the execution on the breaks. They've bumbled through a lot of 3-on-1 and 2-on-1 breaks the last couple seasons.

Defensively, it was nice to see the man-to-man again. Still some work to be done, particularly with the hedging by the big men. Z looked better than Madsen in this area, IMO. I'm still a bit concerned about how the starting lineup will matchup with a quick pg or a big pf. Ricky Jackson for Walsh was a good guy to have out there. Seemed to have an advantage on Lighty and ET in both height and strength, but they held their own pretty well.

The defensive rebounding got off to an awful start. It seemed like Walsh had about 5 in the first 5 minutes, but they really seemed to focus on it after that. Walsh ended up with ~15 offensive boards, but a large number of those seemed to be of the garbage variety. (Guy on a fast break gets his shot blocked by the under side of the rim, ball falls into teammates hands for layup). When ET dedicated himself to defensive rebounding, they seemed to dry up for Walsh. ET getting the rebound also led to quite a few fast breaks.

Look like it should be a fun team. Aggresive man defense. Up-tempo. Good shooters. Good athleticism.

I was surprised at how little Kecman played. Him and Offutt look like they could be the odd-men out this year.

Madsen started at center, but Z will be behind Dallas on the depth chart with Madsen as the third guy. Z looked much better than what I was expecting.

Man defense is not going to alleviate our rebounding woes, unfortunately.
