The following is the most recent rankings of federal graduation rates for scholarship athletes at schools that play NCAA Division I-A football, released last fall. The programs are ranked according to the percentage of athletes who entered as freshmen in the fall of 1997 and graduated within six years.

The chart compares those rates or percentages against the graduation rates for all freshmen who entered those schools and the differences between those figures.

Each I-A athletic program also earned a graduation rate for a four-year cycle in which the class entering in fall '97 was the most recent. That rate also is compared to that of the school's general population for the same time period.

The NCAA will begin figuring graduation rates on its own next year instead of using government figures, and the rates collectively should be considerably higher. Future rates won't penalize schools for athletes who transfer out while still in good academic standing, and they will begin to include athletes who transfer in and go on to graduate. The current system works against schools that lose students to transfers after a coaching change.

(The three service academies – Air Force, Army and Navy – don't report graduation rates for athletes since their scholarship aid isn't directly connected to athletics.)

Now I understand why the SEC hangs on to Vanderbilt - that is sad.

As for OSU this is Cooper data and does not at all reflect where JT is taking the program. So while it may be a bit disappointing the solution is already in place.

While I get mad at the statement too, only Iowa was an exception to this rule (I may have missed a few others). OkState too, but they wre virtually identical to OU in their graduation rate. Whereas Kansas, Florida, Michigan, Washington, Michigan (not by much), and others were ahead of their state counterparts. But it still is a rather ridiculous argument as not that much separates schools that are separated by 10-20 spots.

Biggest problem with stats
Is that schools with early draft entries are lower rated when in reality the financial security being a top draft pick is more than the average graduate. Miami and OSU were hurt by this in recent years.

The best part about this statistic is that the difference between these statistics and the ones a few years from now when Tressel's influence shows up in the stats... it's gonna be night and day difference... and tOSU's not too bad right now.

Don't forget, too, that tOSU is the largest school in the country. They usually battle it out in that distinction with Texas every year. Yet tOSU is way ahead of them in academics. When you're putting 50,000+ through at a 60+% rate, that's sure a lot of folks!!

I'm not about to work that out... but I'm guessing 75-80% as of Tressel's arrival? maybe closer to the 75, though not for lack of effort at improvement.
