COLUMBUS, Ohio: Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel has added Paul Haynes to his staff. Haynes, 35 and from Columbus, will coach the Buckeyes' defensive backs. He replaces Mel Tucker, who resigned recently to become an assistant coach with the Cleveland Browns.

Haynes has spent the past two years at Michigan State as coach of the defensive backs. Prior to joining the Spartans' staff, he spent a year at Louisville in a similar capacity. He has coached, too, with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2001), Kent State (1999-2000), Northern Iowa (1997-98) and Ferris State (1995-96). He was assistant head coach at Kent State, which is alma mater.

"Coming home like this is a dream come true for me," said Haynes. "From the day I began coaching, it was always a goal of mine to coach at Ohio State. To have the opportunity to work for Coach Tressel makes it even more special. If you grow up in the state of Ohio and are interested in coaching, you know the Tressel name. I have tremendous respect for him and am looking forward to being on his staff."<!-- STORY AD BEGINS HERE -->

<!-- STORY AD ENDS HERE -->Added Haynes, who is a graduate of DeSales High School in Columbus, "I had an opportunity to both play and coach against Tressel-coached teams during my career. It will be nice to finally be on the same sideline."

Tressel believes Haynes is the perfect fit for his staff.

"Paul knows Ohio and also has recruited Georgia and Florida, so that made him a very attractive candidate," said the Ohio State coach. "Everyone we talked to had nothing but great things to say about him, and he is very impressive one-on-one. All of our coaches felt like he was going to fit in very nicely on our staff. And I know he is excited about the opportunity to come home."

Haynes graduated from DeSales in 1987. He walked on at Kent State the following fall and went on to play four years of varsity football. As a freshman safety, he led the team in interceptions with three. As a sophomore he was the team leader in tackles with 116. After sitting out the 1989 season with a knee injury, he was a starter in 1990 and '91 and wound up his career with 440 tackles, the seventh highest total in Kent State history and the fifth-best effort in NCAA annals by a defensive back. While at Kent State, Haynes played for three head coaches - Glen Mason, **** Crum and Pete Cordelli.

Haynes began his coaching career at Bowling Green in 1994 as a graduate assistant. He moved to Ferris State the following year as coach of the defensive backs and spent two years in that capacity before moving on to Northern Iowa. After two years at Northern, where he coached the running backs and the secondary, he returned to his alma mater as secondary coach and assistant head coach. He left Kent following the 2000 season to become the quality control coach at Jacksonville. In 2002, he moved to Louisville, but was there just one year, accompanying John L. Smith to Michigan State in 2003.

"I am anxious to get started at Ohio State," said Haynes. "The first thing I want to do is get to know our returning players and start building relationships. That is the foundation of any good team."

Haynes and his wife, Danita has three children: Jordyn (10), Tarron (6) and Kennedy Rose (10 months).

good coaching experience. and experience recruiting both GA and FL.

Only negative I see is that Tucker had strong relationships in NE Ohio region, I hope we don't skip a beat recruiting in this area.

I'm sure others on the staff can recruit this area very well

There aren't many areas (outside of pockets within FL, TX, and CA) that are more talent rich than NE Ohio.

If Tressel continues to beat scUM fairly consistently (66% or more), which I think he will, this should be no problem. I like the ties this guy has in the south, hopefully that will come in handy.

Another thing to consider is that we do not need this guy to make the same impact that tucker did... when he got here tOSU was definitely down and he helped to revitalize that. Haynes arrives as the tOSU tidal wave is gaining speed, ready to crash the BCS party again and upset the trojans.

If Haynes can simply help mold our younger DBs like Jamario and others, we should have a really good shot at a NC for the next two years, despite playing a very tough schedule. Yet that schedule, with tons of national coverage plus 2 unmatched games in tOSU-Texas and tOSU-scUM is gonna be a huge recruiting bonus.

I guess my overall point is that Tucker probably cannot be replaced in terms fo some of his intangibles. But we may be able to continue to land top talent simply based on our success, and hopefully haynes does continue the MSU-transfer coaching pattern.

somebody at MSU was recruiting NE Ohio well (especially Canton), so I am sure Haynes has some ties there...

I love what moves like this say about the pecking order in the Big Ten. Dantonio was a promotion, this was lateral. Wont help John L recruit in Ohio one bit.
