His video reminded me a bit of Michael Hart. He has that same kind of running motion like his body is a step behind his head. He is going to be a great one. Would love to see him in Columbus but I imagine there is going to be some pull toward Michigan as well.

All right...we've got dad and mom on our side. That's great that Gary said that Dan is the #1 rb in the state next year and will give Torrence a challenge for #1 overall player in the state. Hopefully when the offer comes, he accepts and we can tap into that Harding pipeline because they've got some terrific players in that '07 class.

It's amazing to me how all of these stud players from the Warren/Youngstown
area are related to each other. A family of brothers such as the Browners, or Griffins, or Selmons isn't unusual but all these kids seem to be another player's cousin. Clarrett was related to Delbert Ferguson, and Walter Reyes. Burgess has a cousin who's a player, Manningham has a cousin in the mix and so on.

Three years ago I went to a WGH game and they had a wide receiver named Warfield. I think he ended up at a MAC school. Someone at the game told me he was a nephew of Paul Warfield. When they talk about small world they aren't kidding in Warren.

Harding rolls in turf debut, 49-22

By ED PUSKAS Tribune Chronicle Assistant Sports Editor

WARREN - Warren G. Harding running back Dan Herron ran for three touchdowns and quarterback Sidney Glover ran for two scores and passed for another in the Raiders' season-opening victory over Cleveland John F. Kennedy Friday night.

But the real star of Harding's 49-22 win was the new playing surface at Mollenkopf Stadium, which saw its first game action after a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

"We missed a lot of the pomp and circumstances because we were in the locker room, but we're thrilled to death with the field,'' Harding coach Thom McDaniels said.

The Raiders played like it, especially early. They scored touchdowns on each of their first three possessions and led 21-0 halfway through the first quarter. The Eagles got within seven points, 21-14, in the second quarter but never really threatened the Raiders.

Herron scored on runs of 3, 2 and 3 yards. The junior finished with 180 yards on 18 carries.

"It was fun to be on something new,'' Herron said. "The fans came out and supported us and we played good on our first time playing on the field, so we got what we wanted.''

Glover, a junior making his first start at quarterback, had touchdown runs of 21 and 15 yards and threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to fullback Reggie Scrivens. Glover ran for 162 yards on 11 carries. Seven of his rushes went for 10 yards or more.

"Everybody wanted to see what the new field would be like,'' Glover said. "It felt good running on it, it didn't hurt when you got hit and there was no mud. The little (pieces of) tire got in your face, but it was all right. Overall, it's a great field. It will be good here for years.''

Glover and Herron are the key components in Harding's newly installed option attack.

"That's why we committed to it in the offseason,'' McDaniels said. "It was the thought that we had two playmakers there - one guy who touches the ball every snap he's in there and the other guy who gets it an awful lot.''

Sophomore backup Avery Qualls and junior wideout Chris Rucker accounted for the Raiders' other touchdown on a 68-yard catch and run.

Harding senior placekicker Alena Westover converted all seven of her PAT attempts.

Harding wasn't as effective defensively, despite sacking JFK quarterback Demonte Clements five times. When the Raiders didn't tackle Clements, the elusive and strong-armed senior made them pay. He was 13-of-28 for 333 yards and three touchdowns. The scoring passes covered 41, 50 and 27 yards and senior wideout Tyrone Bolden was on the receiving end each time.

"I think it's very obvious that we have to do a better job of defending the pass,'' McDaniels said. "They threw the ball down the field and I don't think that we did a great job in coverage all the time. I think we had some blown coverages. I think we had some misalignments and miscommunication.

"It certainly gives us something to work on.''

But the new turf was the star. Harding athletic director Paul Trina said before the game the school hopes to be able to draw an Ohio High School Athletic Association state semifinal to Mollenkopf this season.

But for now, the surface belongs to the Raiders.

"It felt good just being out there in front of the fans,'' senior linebacker JoJo Watson said. "I know the fans loved the field and it felt good running on it. It's something new.'' epuskas@tribune-chronicle.com
