Elks shut down Northmont

Centerville ground attack, miscues, too much for T-Bolts

By Mark Gokavi
Dayton Daily News

CLAYTON | Centerville rookie quarterback Ben Hemenway threw some warmup passes before Friday's game against Northmont.

He didn't need to.

In this matchup of running versus passing teams, score one for the ground game, big-time. The Centerville Elks nabbed six turnovers and used an all-rushing attack to post a 20-7 win in front of 8,000 spectators.

Centerville, ranked No. 1 in the Dayton Daily News Division I ratings, topped No. 2 Northmont with a classic formula: Defense, field position and hard running.

The Elks (3-0) took a 17-0 halftime lead, converting a fumble and two interceptions into three scores.

"You cause turnovers, they don't just give you turnovers," Centerville coach Ron Ullery said. "That was a big part in this game. Our defense, give them all the credit in the world. That is a great offensive football team over there, the best we've seen this year."

Once Centerville got the ball, Hemenway took over. In his first start at quarterback on any level, the junior unofficially ran for a 108 yards on 28 carries. He also made good reads while handing off to Dan Drake, Jason Combs and James Cravens. The Elks never passed.

"I found out I was starting Thursday," said Hemenway, whose only QB experience was 14 plays last weekend. "It's different. The team is yours and you're running everything out there. You've got to read them. You can't make mistakes. It's a big job."

Northmont (2-1) couldn't hold off Centerville's defensive line, which created opportunities for the Elks' linebackers and defensive backs.

Unofficially, Thunderbolts quarterback Clay Belton was 17 of 32 for 207 yards. But the Elks intercepted four Belton passes and picked up two Northmont fumbles. Penalties and miscues hampered any comeback.

The Elks led 7-0 on a Combs' 8-yard run. Kicker Chris Mehlhorn added a 42-yard field goal before Hemenway's 1-yard plunge put the Elks up 17-0.

After Belton hit Andy Wittman for 54 yards, he connected with Kurt Coleman. The Ohio State-bound two-way player made nice moves but fumbled on the 2. Later, after another Melhorn field goal, Coleman did return a kickoff 93 yards for the 'Bolts only score.

"We played right into their hands," Northmont coach Lance Schneider said. "We turned the ball over and that's what they want to do. They want to keep it away from you and I think we had (nine) possessions the whole game."

One of many defensive standouts, Centerville linebacker Tyler Replogle had a sack and an interception. "We knew we were going to get a couple turnovers," Replogle said. "I didn't know we'd get that many. That was nice."

Northmont (3-1) vs. Trotwood-Madison (2-2)

When: 7:30 p.m. today

Where: T-M H.S.

2004 result: Northmont, 35-20

Outlook: The Thunderbolts rebounded from their loss to Centerville with a 41-7 victory over Sidney. The recipe was as usual — Clay Belton passes to Justin Watkins with a dose of Kurt Coleman special teams magic. Now, Northmont will look to extend its dominance over GWOC West teams. In T-M, Northmont finds a team with a few good athletes who have had trouble scoring. The Rams were shut out 28-0 by Piqua last week. The week before, the offense struggled in a 20-9 loss to Hamilton. If this one isn't going to according to form, it will be because the Rams slow Northmont's passing attack. Only Centerville has done that. Also, T-M must find a way to get Cameron Mobley and Jovani Chappel the ball in open space.

I need to see Belton play. This kid sounds legit. Big dude with a nice arm. My people in the Dayton area tell me he's a statue though.

Coleman is gonna be tough.
