Eh, would have be nice to have Kurt make the list, but it's not like he was gonna or should win it. Plus I can't complain given that Jenkins robbed Eric Berry last year.

To add to Kurt Coleman's stats.....of his 53 tackles, 30 were solo.
He has also had 2 TFL in comparison to 0 by Taylor Mays.

Eric Berry should be the front runner IMO for the Thorpe award....he is a real slobber-knocker and has the stats to back it up.

The bombs, so to speak, fell one after another on the true freshman who was just trying to find his way.

It all happened three years ago, but the impact resonates on, forming who he is each day, changing him, improving him. It will go on like this for as long as Kurt Coleman lives.

He's a senior now at Ohio State, one of the best safeties in the Big Ten and in the nation. See those three fumbles he forced this fall? See that interception he returned 89 yards for a touchdown?

He will be showing off his game Saturday afternoon in Beaver Stadium.

And yet, three years ago, Coleman nearly gave up on football.

One bomb after another.

One wondrous opportunity after another.

It was April 14, 2006, maybe a Thursday or Friday during spring football practice in Columbus.

Coleman had been on campus only a few months after graduating early from high school. He was beginning to make a name for himself when he zeroed in on a walk-on receiver in practice, a kid running an ordinary curl route across the middle of the field.

Coleman swooped in from behind but didn't launch himself, didn't hit so ferociously like he's known to do time after time. He simply caught up to Tyson Gentry, dragged him down, made the tackle.

And two lives changed forever.

Congrats to Kurt for being nominated for the Wuerffel Trophy. Buckeye Joel Penton won this award in 2006, it's second year of existence.

FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. - The All Sports Association announced today the nominees for the 2009 Wuerffel Trophy. The nominations received represented over 70 universities in the NCAA's Football Bowl Subdivision. Among the nominees is senior safety Kurt Coleman.

"This year's Wuerffel Trophy nomination class is awesome!" commented All Sports Association President Robert McEachern. "We received the most nominations ever and believe this shows the tremendous growth of the Wuerffel Trophy nationally. A large majority of the nation's colleges and universities, as well as every conference in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision is represented. The All Sports Association is extremely proud of all of these young men and their accomplishments."

Named after former Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel, the Wuerffel Trophy is presented annually to the Football Bowl Subdivision player that best combines exemplary community service, with academic and athletic achievement.

The 2009 Wuerffel Trophy finalists will be announced on November 11, 2009 and distributed to the award's National Selection Committee for voting. Formal announcement of the winner will occur on Tuesday, December 8, 2009. Presentation of the 2009 Wuerffel Trophy will be at the All Sports Association's 41st Annual Awards Dinner on February 19, 2010, in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.

Past winners of the Wuerffel Trophy are: (2008) Tim Tebow, QB, Florida; (2007) Paul Smith, QB, Tulsa; (2006) Joel Penton, DL, Ohio State and (2005) Rudy Niswanger, OL, Louisiana State.

Today marks the last Michigan game that Ohio State safety Kurt Coleman will ever play. Like every other senior on both teams, the captain must fight the impulse to try to be Superman in an attempt to get in on every play.

"We have to have our eyes on a swivel," Coleman said. "We can't let anybody get past us."

Those will be the orders for Coleman and fellow safeties Anderson Russell and Jermale Hines. The Buckeyes are expected to be in a nickel defense (five defensive backs) most of the afternoon as they take on Michigan's spread offense, led by freshman quarterbacks Tate Forcier and Denard Robinson. It is not a day for safeties to abandon their posts on a whim with the intent of making a game-changing play.

Michigan, at 5-6, is desperate not only for a win that will make it bowl eligible for the first time since 2007, but also to put a stop to its six-game losing streak in the Big Ten and its five-game losing streak to Ohio State.

"This offense allows for a lot of trickery and they can do a lot of things with it," Coleman said. "What would they lose, bringing everything out of the bag?

"This is for all the marbles for both of us. We want to come out with this win, and so do they. They want to be bowl eligible, so I think they are going to do whatever it takes to get the 'W.'"

Forcier is more of a passer, "but we always have to conscious of coming up and making a play with Tate scrambling," Coleman said.

When Robinson enters, the defense must flip the page of the scouting report.

"He's very fast and he's elusive," Coleman said. "It's going to be a challenge. We have to have full-alert awareness of what he's doing."
