Say What? (Gene Smith)
Huh? I'm sorry but this (mis)statement by Gene Smith will certainly be remembered by many and is not what I'd call getting off to a good start at Ohio State. I guess he meant that the "team" lost to Michigan but he didn't. I'm mystified.
RUMBLINGS (Gene Smith) - Columbus Dispatch RUMBLINGS Friday, March 11, 2005 BOB HUNTER Perhaps Gene Smith had a case of selective amnesia Saturday during his introduction to media, alumni and friends at Ohio State’s Longaberger Alumni House. After being announced as OSU’s new athletics director, Smith drew applause from the partisan crowd when he said near the end of his prepared remarks, "Lastly, let me say, in my years of coaching at Notre Dame, I never lost to Michigan." Problem is, he did. Twice, in fact. Smith served as a Notre Dame assistant from 1977 to 1981, and the Irish lost to Michigan 28-14 in 1978 and 25-7 in 1981. The Irish also beat the Wolverines twice. Big deal....so he forgot two losses in the 70s......lets give the guy a chance. Believe me, I not exaclty thrilled about a "Notre Dame guy" (yes I know he is from Cleveland...but I dont give a crap...he is still a domer) as our AD but I'm not going to run the guy ot of town without at least seeing what he brings to the table. I just hope he works well with Tressel...truthfully Tressel (to ME) is the most important individual in the department (yeah I know Thad will do wonders too, but Tressel is the best thing to happen to OSU in a decade). At least thats how I feel about it.....

He's probably using the Gordan Gee definition of a win
 , regardless someone needs to teach him what it means to wear the red and white in Buckeye Stadium.

Yeah, we've got some nice people in top positions now (Tress and Matta), but it boggles my mind how a university that is pumping out some 10,000+ grads a year has to continually hire people like Smith, Holbrook, Cooper, and even Geiger for key positions of high visibility. It's like there's no true pride in the product put out by The OSU. Archie is played up well by the university in his role, so why not the other positions, too? I know I'm being a homer, but who CARES what some Domer did for that bunch of elitists in South Bend?

Maybe he'll put more emphasis on students at bball games, and the Schott will be sold out almost every game in a year or two. How exactly are tOSU grads always better to fill a role? I doubt there are tons of tOSU grads we would want at AD that are interested in walking into the cobwebs of tOSU's bball program. Hopefully everything will blow over, but unlike the football team there seems to be a lot of ugly stuff here. Plus regardless of the truth, the football team's woes also make it a less desirable position. Maybe you should look at it from the opposite perspective. tOSU has such an amazing athletic department that we draw people from all over the nation. I'm sure Smith is beginning to see just how complex the Buckeye system really is. Give him a few months to get in the saddle. Let's hope he's the type to give others credit, before taking it for himself...in other words, a real leader.

Jeffrey Dahmer, Andrew Lee, and Louis Irizarry attended The Ohio State University. Thad Matta, Gene Smith, Jim Tressel, and Wayne Woodrow Hayes did not. Get over yourself. This is the dumbest post I have read in a while......

Woody never won on style points.
Geiger will go down as one of the most successful ADs in the history of college sports and is leaving an infrastructure legacy that is unparallelled. I think Gene Smith may have wanted to make a statement like Archie did or perhaps like Tressel's statement about going to TSUN the first time. I don't see any value in statements. I see value in an AD who is a class act and competitor of note. By class act, I mean someone who exudes integrity. Who does the right things for his teams no matter what the price. Who instills the values of hard work on the field and in the classroom. Who can teach these young men that dishonesty is the great leveller, especially dishonesty to one's self. I see value in someone who yearns to win so badly that it sometimes hurts. Who helps his teams understand that victory is earned 365 days a year and that there is no substitute for being ready to play. Who shows humility and respect toward all in victory and graciousness and respect in the rare instances of defeat. I see value in a motivator who helps young people see and share a vision of the national championship every year and then shows them the path of how to get there as a team and who makes sure his coaches have what it takes to provide that path. But I don't see any value in sound bite minutes. I see value in performance.
