Buckeye Sticker

Where's the National Champioship game OSU vs. Miami. That's one of the greatest games ever and to top it off it had a great ending.

Dude,

Didn't you read the link, that's only games 70-79.

They still have to name games 69-1.

And its only from 1970 to present day

And in case someone sets off about how the likes of the 1935 ND OSU game isn't on the list -- it ain't going to be. The "Top 100" is from 1970 to present day.

Thumbs up

Nice post Tibs, but noticing that the picks are all fairly recent. Maybe that won't be so obvious in the front 70. Hope to see NWs 21 point comeback against Michigan listed along with the Bucks win over ASU in the 97 Rose Bowl.

The 97 Rose Bowl has to be on there eventually. I was at that game, my first Buckeye game actually. I remember Jake the Snake breaking my heart in one breath then Germaine making my year the next. What a rollercoaster ride that was! Been hooked ever since.

I certainly hope that the '89 (I think) Minnesota game makes the list too.

Thanks for the link Tibor.

Geez, am I the first one to realize that probably the only reason Tibor posted that link was because it talks about Oklahoma beating the Bucks at The Shoe? I wasn't even alive for that one, so I can't say I'm as heartbroken about that one as some of the others I've actually witnessed - but I'm surprised one of the old farts around here didn't pick up on that one and totally browbeat him for it.

Frankly, I'm surprised Tibor blew his load on this one. Why didn't he just wait for the article with the MSU '98 loss in it, so he could bust out his picture of a weeping Neutron Man?

No. 64 Ohio State 20 ... Arizona State 17, Rose Bowl, January 1, 1997
At the time: 11-0, No. 2 ranked Arizona State was in the hunt for a national championship going into the Rose Bowl against a fourth-ranked Buckeye team that saw its championship dream die in a heartbreaking 13-9 loss to Michigan.
The setup: QB Jake Plummer had led the Sun Devils to three heart-stopping wins over the course of the season and would be tested again by Ohio State. Down 14-10, ASU blocked a field goal to give Plummer the ball with just over five minutes to play. Once again, the Snake got the job done converting a 4th and 3 to get down to the OSU eight leading to a touchdown run with 1:40 to play and a 17-13 Sun Devil lead.
The ending: Ohio State had rotated quarterbacks all season long between Stanley Jackson and Joe Germaine. On the final drive of the season, head coach John Cooper turned to the better passer, Germaine, with only one timeout left and 65 yards to go. Germaine and Dimitrius Stanley hooked up for three clutch plays to get to the ASU 29. Unable to slow down the momentum, the Sun Devil secondary started committing penalties flagged on an attempt to Stanley followed up by a pass interference call against David Boston. With :28 to play, OSU had it first and goal on the five. Germaine was able to find Boston in the right flat for a touchdown and a 20-17 lead with only :19 to play. This time, Plummer wasn't able to get the job done as his last gasp drive stalled.
How they ended up: Florida beat unbeaten Florida State in the Sugar Bowl meaning Arizona State would've likely been the national champion if it had held on against the Buckeyes. Instead, ASU finished fourth. Ohio State was passed over by the Gators for the national title finishing second.

After the game, ND was still ranked 5th, behind #3 tOSU and #4 scUM. After they beat a 5-6 Miami team 44-0, ND moved ahead of both to #3. They got to play Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, win by a point, and be declared NC. That tOSU team ended up #2, but would have beaten ND, and I've wanted a playoff since 1973. My screen name is in honor of that Buckeye team.

Here's Fiu's write-up of the tie:

No. 41 Ohio State 10 ... Michigan 10, November 24, 1973
At the time: 10-0, No. 1 Michigan hosted 9-0, No. 4 Ohio State for the Big Ten title, the Rose Bowl berth, and national title consideration. The Buckeyes had allowed 33 points (an average of 3.67 points per game) and a mere three touchdowns while the Wolverines had given up a total of 49 points.
The setup: In a hard-hitting, intense battle, Ohio State took a 10-0 halftime lead on a 31-yard field goal and a five-yard Pete Johnson touchdown. Michigan battled back in the second half with a 30-yard field goal and a Dennis Franklin ten-yard touchdown run.
The ending: Unfortunately for the Wolverines, Franklin was knocked out for the game on what could've been the game-winning drive with a broken collarbone with 2:25 to play. This would have repercussions on more than just this game (more on that in a moment). Fearing an interception, Michigan head coach Bo Schembechler ordered three straight running plays to give Mike Lantry a long field goal try. Even though it was from 58 yards out, Lantry just missed. Ohio State tried to pull off the win by throwing the ball, but this was a pure running team. Michigan's Jon Drake picked off a Greg Hare pass and got it to the Ohio State 33 with :52 left. After two conservative plays, Schembechler went for the field goal on third down. Lantry missed from 44 yards out for a 10-10 finish.
How they ended up: The Big Ten athletic directors had to vote on who went to the Rose Bowl. With Franklin hurt, some believed Michigan wouldn't be the stronger of the two teams and sent the Buckeyes to Pasadena by a vote of 6-4. OSU beat USC 42-21 to finish 10-0-1 and No. 2 in the AP poll. Michigan finished ranked sixch.

Bill, i think the '73 team was the best OSU team in history, and would put them up against any college team before or since.

Sounds like the reporter got his take on the game totally from Schembchler's point of view. Glad to see no bias
I always liked Bo because he was so much like Woody, but hey, if you can't win on your home field, why do you think you deserve to go?

I always got the feeling listening to Parseghian dong ABC games that he didn't like tOSU very much. I wish we could have given him another reason not to like us!
