To me, when you say "Who" had the biggest impact, that implies one person. That would have to me Coach Tressel. He set the groundwork for the 2002 NC in the previous season, with his recruiting, his building of team camaraderie, his calm yet confident sideline demeanor...everything. While I'd pick Krenzel as the offensive MVP (barely, over Clarett) and Smith as defensive MVP (barely, over Wilhelm), there's no doubt in my mind that it was Tressel who instilled that "little extra" in every player which got them over the hump.

I agree.. the OSU TEAM won that championship. Not Tressel or Krenzel or Doss or Wilhelm. But that just seems like a sneaky way to dodge the question. Like Mili said, "who" implies one person. At least, that's the way I understand the spirit of the question.

what/who did we have in 02 (NC year) that we didn't in '03 (11-2)? and you should get your answers.
MoC?
Doss?
Home game w/ SCum
Gamble?
I think coaching always plays a big role in Championship teams. So, I'm not gonna count the coaches into this answer.. cuz they are automatic. Entire team who won is in there too. but if I have to choose one player then I'd pick MoC. We missed him in 03. I am not saying MoC was that great. Any other good RB would have been enough too.

Gamble was there in '03. He left after the K-State Fiesta Bowl game.
And according to your logic, if the games were played 10 times, or 100 times, or an infinite number of times, 2002 Ohio State ALWAYS beats 2002 Michigan, because the players are always the same. 2002 Ohio State ALWAYS beats 2002 Wisconsin, and 2002 Miami, and 2002 Purdue. And 2003 Michigan ALWAYS beats 2003 Ohio State. All because the players are the same.
I think the games are more than just the players/coaches involved. The differences between 2002 Ohio State (14-0) and 2003 Ohio State (11-2) are more than Doss, Nickey, Wilhelm, Vance, etc.
