OSU Schedules Press Conference

OSU President Karen Holbrook and athletic director Gene Smith have called a 3 p.m. press conference today to discuss the NCAA investigations into the football and men's and women's basketball programs.

Ohio State President Karen Holbrook and athletic director Gene Smith will hold a press conference at 3 p.m. today to discuss the NCAA investigations into the football and men's and women's basketball programs. According to sources, the NCAA has completed the fact finding phase of at least its investigation into the men's basketball program and may have findings to reveal there.

However, penalties connected to at least that investigation may not be known until the Committee on Infractions meets in the fall.

Maybe I am not smart enough to follow, but it doesnt sound like anything is going on. Nothing new or exciting. They are mentioning September as a date when there will be an "answer" or any more sanctions.

Mr Smith and Mrs. Holbrook are just answering questions, and there has been quite a few "Too early to tell.." type answers.

Only one infraction related to the football program -the booster's payment to Troy Smith. Nothing related to Clarett. Bruce Hooley and Bill Livingston (along with other selected OSU fans) must be the saddest people in the state right now.

One note -- Gene Smith added that the charge "Failure to monitor" is a different charge from "Lack of Institutional Control" and is a lesser charge.

this is from bucknuts premium with respect to the basketball program. osu could quite likely get away with some penalties such as loss of big 10 championship and final 4 banner and a possible scholarship loss for a few years, but additional loss of postseason play seems unlikely.

Basically the list of allegations that the NCAA sent to OSU today are all of the allegations that OSU self reported to the NCAA.

Troy Smith - $500 Improper Benefit (Booster)

Bobon S. - Improper benefits and possible improper academic benefit (Kathleen Salyers)

Alexander R. - $6000 Improper benefit (Jim O'Brien)

Women's basketball team - 5 (current or former) players received improper benefit (Local orthodontist). Free or greatly reduced fee on orthodontic work from orthodontist.

Sounds like nothing new. The NCAA committee to hear/decide on sanctions/punishment is scheduled to meet in September.

Just listened via the internet.

The only football finding was Troy Smith. Someone specifically asked if this would seem like the NCAA didn't investigate the Football program and Holbrook & Smith basically said "Look at what the found on the basketball program, and they are sure they were investigated just as heavily"

The penalty meetings will be September/October. Meaning right after or before the Texas game ESPN will be able to do an article about what penalties occur. But they seem to really have no clue what will happen to the basketball team.

Also, it seems like most of the pages were on the basketball program. Like 3yards said "Failure to monitor is a different charge from "Lack of Institutional Control" and is a lesser charge. But still will seem like a heavy charge. I am definately seeing us losing all the banners from that time and giving back money. But who knows what else.

On another note... Hooley did sound sad that he couldn't rip Ohio State more.

That's good news if nothing new was found. ESPN-News has a little blurb stating that 'Ohio State has 9 potential NCAA violations' but of course they don't say if anything was new or not.

I guess I've been under a rock the last six months...I thought Smith took only $100 and not $500. If it were only $100, then I would guess his 2-game suspension would suffice. If it is indeed $500, then I could see a few games more, or even a loss of some official visits (don't think it's enough to warrant a forfeiture of scholarship).

The NCAA issued seven points of concern with the program:

1) That $6,700 was paid to recruit Aleksandar Radojevic, which ultimately got O'Brien fired.

2) That Kathleen Salyers had improper in-person contact with and gave impermissible recruiting inducements to Radojevic.

3) That an individual who became a booster after provding benefits gave recruiting inducements and benefits to a former men's basketball student-athlete.

4) That a booster provided a former men's basketball student-athlete with impermissible academic assistance.

5) That O'Brien impermissibly provided Salyers with two season tickets for four consecutive home basketball seasons.

6) That O'Brien and a former assistant, Paul Biancardi, acted contrary to the principles of ethical conduct for failing to report their knowing involvement in NCAA rules violations.

and

7) That both the institution and O'Brien failed to monitor the conduct and administration of the men's basketball program.

As far as the football program goes, the NCAA's notices appear to solely finger quarterback Troy Smith for allegedly receiving money from a booster. No mention of anything related to Maurice Clarett or anyone else appears.

The women's basketball notices entail a booster providing free orthodontics work to members of that team.

Ohio State gave its men's basketball program a voluntary one-year ban from the postseason. That ban was served this past season, head coach Thad Matta's first.

The football program has already suspended Smith from last season's Alamo Bowl and for the first game of the 2005 campaign (to be played against Miami of Ohio).

I don't think so, Mili, I'm almost positive that the two-game suspension is all he'll be hit with...especially since the NCAA and the University have known since it first came out how much money it was. I think the threshold is more than $500 to warrant a longer suspension.

1460 (Herbie and whoever other guy is) is giving some quote from the Dispatch that the NCAA investigation is not complete and when it is THEY will hold a press conference not the member school.

Of course now Herbie is saying the NCAA is stupid to think if they send 29 pages of violations that the member school would not hold a press conference ASAP.

Oh so much fun we will have this summer. Why can't we have a normal summer of celebrating the previous year and looking forward to the next year without even worrying about this?
