I went for a life insurance physical today, not something I thought would be particularily enjoyable, and it turned out to be the highlight of my week.
After writing a big insurance check to my agent, I was told to wait in the room for the doc to give me a physical. The doc and the nurse come in and start with the usual questions. They learn that I'm a Buckeye, and for the next half hour, the physical is on hold, and we trade Buckeye anecdotes and share memories. Turns out he and his wife (the nurse) bleed scarlet and grey. He and their two children were all scholarship BDBITL players, and they are huge long term
OSU supporters.
The best story he shared was from 1973. He was in New York for the Football Hall of Fame Foundation meeting, representing tOSU with others. The doc was asked by another tOSU representative whether he minded sharing his room with an "old man" who didn't have a room reserved at the Waldorf Astoria, where the Foundation dinner meeting was being held. Doc said "sure", and after a bit, he headed up to his room. As he walked into his room, he noticed some noise coming from the open bathroom suite, and as he took a couple steps toward the bathroom, he encountered Coach Hayes sitting on the throne. Doc was overwhelmed with the moment, and he stormed into the bathroom and shook Woody's hand while he remained on the pedestal. Coach smiled and said, "I do believe this is a first for me, meeting someone while on the crapper!"
Woody eventually dismounted, and he spent the next hour talking to doc, inquiring about Doc's family and other personal information. Woody invited Doc to his table for cocktails at the Foundation meeting that night. Doc sat with Woody, Ara P., Bear Bryant, and VP Gerald Ford. They sat in front of the podium, and John Wayne was the invited speaker for the night. It was one of Doc's greatest days of his life, and it gave me chills to hear him tell about it. I could have listened to him for hours, but eventually it was time for me to give blood, urine, and cough!
Woody treated Doc like a family member, just like he did everyone he met in his time with the students of The Ohio State University. He was a Man.
