How bout we just 86 all the polls in the BCS formula & use the computer rankings for their original purpose?
To create an unbiased, objective, and fair National Title Game .. |

The initial purpose of the computer rankings was to appease the AP poll. AP voters were worried (and it seems rightly) that being a part of the selection process would change their status from "reporting the news" to "making the news".
The original purpose of the BCS poll was to eliminate split champions between the AP and Coach's poll. Unbiased/objective =/= competent |

Glad you're still around Nutty. Hope you stop by more often. |

Nutty made another brief appearance a few days ago. But the more from him, certainly the merrier.

Misanthrope: "Everyone loved the computers until they *GASP* contradicted the human polls, at which "everyone knew" the computers were wrong."
Not me. I'd much rather have 100% computer selection than give the Mike Lupicas or Bill Rhodens of the world (who don't watch the games, don't care about CFB, and have axes to grind) any say in who plays for the National Championship. Most of the media is around to cover pro sports. They have no idea what's going on when it comes to CFB. "That's just great...let's assemble a poll to select participants in the "national championship" game. Heaven forbid we actually let the participants earn their entry on the playing field." More times than not, it is decided on the playing field. In 2002, the System worked perfectly. And, I can make a pretty good argument that the system worked pretty well all of the other BCS years. |

Worst BCS moment in history was in 03 when USC got "snubbed" and the commish of the BCS is all apologies. In my view, the system did EXACTLY what it was supposed to do, and that is, of course, seperate 3 (or more) like teams. And that is what he should have said, "Look folks, you want a game that pits the two best teams in the country, and we developed a system whcih we believe seperates otherwise like teams. USC is a fine team, but fact is OU and LSU played harder schedules and ended up with the same record. In our system, that means they "deserve it" more."
I agree with the comment Misanthrope made whole heartedly.... A large part of the point of the Computers was to take the human componant - fallible as it is, due to bias or region or the simple fact that you can't watch 60 games in one day - out of it... well, lessen the impact. 03 provides another fine example of this human componant. OU loses 2 of it's last 2 games and ends up falling from #1 to #3, one spot ahead of OSU which ended the season crushing K-State, the very same K-State that handed "the greatest team of all time" it's first L - and did so convincingly. The computers think Team A is better than Media darling? Hmmm... maybe media darling isn't really as great as everone thinks. |

Agreed. Any USC fan that's gonna bitch about getting snubbed that year is out of his mind. If not for that 'snubbing,' there's no way they get a share of that National Title. If you tell me that the Trojans were a better team than LSU on a neutral field, fine. I can buy that. But that Sugar Bowl wasn't a neutral field, & nobody was beating the Tigers on that day. And besides, if you lose a game in CFB you lose all right to bitch about where you get placed ... Bottom line. If you want no arguments, win out. Period. The only time there's a valid argument is if there're 3 undefeated teams for the two spots. Otherwise, take your 1 loss and go cry elsewhere. |
