I was informed of a sophomore lineman who attended the OSU football camp and turned some heads. Sadly, I have forgotten his name, but I'll have it soon....a friend of his family and I speak on occasion and I will fill in this blank.

This was his second time through the OSU camp and I suspect some of you will know who he is since he has had two very solid camps in Columbus. He also camps at PSU and Pitt.

The kid is around 6'5", 300 pounds and was pulled in to JT's office during camp.

JT didn't go so far as to offer him, but did tell him if he wanted to play football at Ohio State there would be a spot for him. Not quite an offer, but not too far from one.

Any one know who this kid is? As I said I will have a name and more info soon, but apparently he tore it up at camp and impressed the staff for the second straight year.

He lost his father, but is very close to his uncle. His uncle indicated that this fella rec'd some sort of award or recognition as the #1 lineman in his class. Do they award such distinctions? If so is there a list? I think his first name was Evan, I would def. recognize it if I saw it in print.

More soon, sorry to be vague but I am hoping some here can fill in the blanks.

LOL...well clearly the grapevine is excited about him. He might have grown since Feb., but I don't think he would be 350.

I'll get some more info this weekend, I'll be visiting with the fellow that knows the family.

It featured one team on the top of the spectrum, defending PIAA titlist Aliquippa, but after the Quips, none of the remaining teams were necessarily displaying the dominance the MAC had demonstrated in the past.

This season, however, parity - and power - should return to the MAC.

The 2005 football season for all of the teams in The Times' coverage area begins this weekend with 11 games on Friday night and three on Saturday.

Aliquippa, which has won or tied for the MAC championship in seven of the last nine seasons, lost the core of a team that went 36-4 over the last three seasons. Nonetheless, the Quips should remain solid contenders.

But the Quips won't have a clear path to the MAC title this season. Center is loaded, with two NCAA Division I prospects on its roster, while Beaver returns the nucleus of a team that won three consecutive games at the end of last season, including victories over two playoff teams.

Throw in a talented Beaver Falls squad, a Freedom team that has made the playoffs in each of the last two seasons, along with always-competitive New Brighton, and one thing appears evident.

The MAC could be back.

"Coming into last season, I think most people felt there was a front runner in Aliquippa and then every other team would battle for the spots behind them," said Beaver coach Jeff Beltz, who is entering his sixth season with the Bobcats. "As the season progressed, things seemed to work out that way. This season, I think there is a general feeling that the teams are more balanced but that Center has the talent in the group to move ahead."

Despite the parity in the MAC, Beltz warns not to be too quick in casting aside Aliquippa.

"I think someone would be crazy to rule out Aliquippa," Beltz said. "They've made the playoffs every year I've been here. If you rule them out, you'll be in trouble."

Center could emerge as the new kings in the MAC with the return of running back/safety Ashton Cobb, who has committed to the University of Kentucky, and two-way lineman Evan Blankenship, a junior who is already being sought after by some of the top college programs in the nation, including Ohio State.

Center, which will play its home games on a new turf field this year, will open its season on Friday at backyard rival Monaca.

"I will say that in my 25 years here, this is probably the most balanced team that Center has had," said Center head coach Larry Taddeo. "We have a good mix with the seniors, juniors and sophomores as well as the positions.

"But you still have to go out and play. You're in the MAC conference, and every Friday night, you have to go out and play."

Beaver, which hosts Summit Academy on Friday night, concluded last season on a high note with its three-game winning streak, including victories over Freedom and Beaver Falls.

Beaver will mix a blend of youth and experience. Defensively it returns its entire linebacking corps and secondary, but on offense it will start two freshmen on the line - R.J. Cook and Chris George - and alternate two sophomores - Collin Burns and Manny Cutlip - at quarterback.

Look for Cutlip - who saw considerable playing time as a freshman on Beaver's football, basketball and baseball teams - to assume somewhat of a "Slash" role for the Bobcats.

"Manny is so gifted we want to make sure he is in a position to make plays for us," Beltz said. "Generally speaking, we want to compete early and give our young linemen a chance to grow early and then try and make a run at the playoffs."

I ran into him at the game Saturday. He said he was 6'3" and weighed 300#. He did say he was heavier , but had lost weight to get to 300. He looked very, very good . Not a 'fat' looking 300 if that makes sense.

His arms were very big for a high school junior. He said it was his 3rd game. I'm not sure if his 3rd this year or 3rd ever. He said he has an OSU offer and, just based on looks, I can see why.

He seemed like a Buckeye fan, just by hearing him talk.

its great that we are getting in on some terrific OOS lineman for next year w/ Blankenship and Oglesby. We seem to be in good position for both already, but it is still so very early.

Blankenship holds offers from Ohio State and Pitt. Kentucky is apparently close to offering. Ohio State, Pitt, Notre Dame, Michigan, Penn State, Iowa, Virginia are his leaders at this point. He will be attending Pitt's and Kentucky's Junior Day and indicates he will attend tOSU's.
